A Lecturer of geography at the Usman dan fodiyo university wrote an article condemning the misuse of the word "indigenous" while describing Nigerian citizens, citing an example with the recent appointment of a special adviser to the Katsina state govt. on indigenous affairs.

For quite some time, the phrase "Indigenous Nigerians" has been misapplied in the Nigerian national question; more especially when dealing with ethnic groups of the polity.

Specifically, some ethnic minority groups, especially from the Southernmost part of the country have been using the phrase (not minding it's in-appropriateness in the Nigerian ethnographic context) to agitate for their political agenda within the realm of the national question as if all the other Nigerian ethnic groups (majorities and minorities) are not indigenous but foreigners to the ethnographical landscape of Nigeria.

Thus, the silence by scholars of Nigerian ethnography made it now as if the phrase has become a generally accepted concept just like the concept of the six geographical zones - (North West, North Central, North East, South West, South East and South South as conceived by the late Vice President Dr. Alex Ekwuame) had since been used in governmental decision and policy-making processes in Nigeria; even though not provided for in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Hence, this practice of using the phrase indigenous peoples has given room to situations where the concept has become acceptable even though not appropriate within the Nigerian ethnographic context.

For example, Katsina State Governor, Rt. Aminu Bello Masari recently appointed Mr. Uche Okonkwo Modestus as Special Assistant on Matters of Indigenous Nigerians Resident in Katsina State.

The 170m question that begets an urgent answer is who are indegenous Nigerians resident in Katsina State or anywhere else in Nigeria?
