A new date of January 16, 2018, has been fixed as deadline for the handover of 9mobile to the preferred bidders.

This is coming shortly after the expiration of December 31, 2017 deadline which Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Communication (NCC), and Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, had earlier said was sacrosanct.

The reason for the new date was still vague as at the time of going to press.
However, Akelicious gathered that the change may have been informed by a letter to Godwin Emefiele, by the NCC, in which Danbatta acknowledged the risk posed by the year-end deadline for submission of bidding offers by prospective bidders for the purchase of 9mobile.
Part of the letter by Danbatta reads: “The commission is in receipt of a letter dated 29th November, 2017, by which the Board of Directors of Emerging Markets Telecoms Services Ltd (9Mobile) requested for an extension of the deadline for the submission of bidding offers by prospective bidders from 31st December 2017 to 16th of January 2018.

“Having carefully considered the reasons given for the proposed extension in the letter under reference, the commission confirms that it has no objection to the request and that the extension can be communicated to the company.”
CBN and NCC had in a letter dated November 4, 2017 made it clear that the sale process of 9mobile must be “transparent and fair, with the financial and technical capabilities of the final bidders without question.”
The duo expressed serious concerns over the sale process since the appointment of Barclays Africa as financial advisers.
According to the letter by CBN and NCC, “They have repeatedly exhibited signs of opacity in the sale process for 9mobile.
“Given the overriding public interest in the company and the need for transparency, we advised that Barclays advertise the call for ‘expression of interest’.
