Two suspects have been arrested by the police Special Fraud Unit (SFU) for conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.

The suspects, Ismaila Oladimeji and Muyideen Sobo, were exposed by the bank while they were trying to open a savings account at different branches of a new generation bank.

Ismaila, the first suspect, was arrested while attempting to open a specialised savings account at the Gbagada branch of the bank. He submitted two reference letters purportedly issued by customers of the bank, a PHCN bill, a drivers’ license and two passport photographs, to enable him open an account in the name of a prominent first class traditional ruler in Abeokuta.

The other suspect, Muyideen, who was also arrested under similar circumstances at the Oshodi branch of the same bank, was said to have attempted to open an account in the name of one of the ministers in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The bank was said to have discovered that the documents presented by the fraudsters were all forged, while performing a KYC (Know Your Customer), which is a test usually carried out before an account is issued to a customer.

Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, Saba Moses commended the diligence of the bank staff and advised other financial institutions to be diligent.
