The Nigerian phone market has been evolutionary since 2012. Before then, a list like this would have featured the likes of LG, Nokia and Sony Ericson. But today, these brands are struggling for patronage, as new players have emerged and a few old ones have developed great devices. So here are the top 5 mobile phone brands in Nigeria today.

5. Gionee: Whether or not Gionee deserves to be on this list is subject to debate, but it is undisputedly a very popular mobile phone brand in Nigeria. Its slick phones are launched with little fanfare, but are usually highly anticipated. It is known for its strong phones, however in recent times, its devices have lost that aura about them for ruggedness and customization. It is still the fifth most popular mobile device brand in Nigeria nonetheless.

4. Infinix: An obvious choice for this list, Infinix is a powerful brand in the Nigerian phone market. Its devices are really good and are extremely popular. Although it appears as a carbon-copy of its sister brand, Tecno, Infinix has created its own identity with it muscle-like exterior design and fairly lower prices. Though Infinix phones are prone to a few issues within its first year of purchase, it is still a popular choice among Nigerians; as not a few are used to using more than one phone each year.

3. Tecno: This is the largest phone company in Nigeria in terms of sales today. From out of nowhere, Tecno took the Nigerian Smartphone market by storm. It easily outsells the bigger brands and has been the main reason why the Android OS became such a hit in Nigeria in the first place. Tecno has followed up with flagship devices that have continually seen high patronage by Nigerians of different income groups. Its devices are cheaper than the alternative high end devices from other brands, and this makes Tecno a household name in Nigeria today.

2. iPhone: Everybody complains about how expensive the IPhone is, yet people still want to own one. That’s a fact! The craze for the iPhone compared to the Blackberry a few years back is only tamed by the fact that Apple devices are much more expensive. And due to this, owning an iPhone is seen today as a sign of prestige, thus a lot people can’t wait to get their hands on one; even if it means owning an older iPhone.

1. Samsung: Samsung is the most sought after brand in the Nigerian mobile phone market today. Samsung has been the only odd man among former top mobile brands. Unlike the others, it took advantage of the openness of the Android early on, even though it has constantly been working on its own. Today, Samsung has created a small monopoly of exclusive apps and features for its devices that make it a desirable brand in Nigeria.
