The Quran and Hadith literature make extensive references to the status of women, both in terms of their religious and spiritual rights and obligations, and concerning their role and status in society. The general thrust of the Quran appears to be to regularize the status of women, which varied enormously within pre-Islamic Arab society. At that time, some people were so displeased with the birth of daughters that they killed them, a practice strongly condemned in the Quran: When news is brought to one of them, of [the birth of] a female child, his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief! With shame does he hide himself from his people, because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain her in contempt, or bury her in the dust? Ah! What an evil they decide on! (16: 58-59) Several other verses in the Quran clearly teach that men and women have equal religious rights and responsibilities: For Muslim men and women … for men and women who humble themselves; for men and women who give in charity; for men and women who fast; for men and women who guard their chastity; and for men and women who engage much in God’s praise, for them has God prepared forgiveness and great reward. (33:35) Other verses imply biological equality between genders – “[God] created for you mates from among yourselves … “(30:21). The Quran also stresses the importance of bonds of affection (“And He has put love and mercy between you” (30:35) and mutual support (“Men and women are protectors, one of another” (9:71). In other places in the Quran, however, men are clearly depicted as superior to women: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given the one more than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore, the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in [the husband’s] absence what God would have them guard. As to those women on whose part you fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and strike them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! God is most high, great. (4:34) Many Muslim scholars including those at LearnReadQuran, the leading online Quran institute which provides online Quran classes for kids & adults have argued that verses that endorse the concept of male superiority were included in the Quran only because the notion of women’s inferiority was so deeply ingrained within Arab society at that time. They blame the patriarchal structure of most Muslim societies on the environments in which Islam spread. In particular, they identify the Mediterranean world as one with a severely misogynistic underpinning, one that was appropriated by Muslims as they spread into cultures that were materially much more advanced than the Arab one and were therefore seen as worthy of imitation. Even the historical development of the Hadith tradition is seen as illustrating this trend. Earlier collections relied heavily on information provided by Muhammad’s (Peace by upon him) widow, A’isha, and generally promoted equality between genders. Later collections, however, played down A’isha’s role and contained rulings that restrict women’s freedom. Despite the gender inequalities seen in the majority of Islamic societies, women from all backgrounds usually embrace rather than reject their religious tradition. Muslim feminists refuse to grand legitimacy either to western critics who see Islam as inherently prejudiced against women, or to Muslim traditionalists who feel that in an Islamic society women should be subordinate to men. Such women (and men) detect two competing understandings within Islam, one expressed in the pragmatic regulations for society, the other in the articulation of an ethical and moral vision according to which men and women are equal in the eyes of God. A challenge to Western notions of women’s emancipation (which are shared by many Muslim modernists) is posed by a tendency among young professional women to adopt the veil voluntarily as a symbol of their own empowerment. Such women see themselves as striving toward an ideal of authentic Islamic womanhood, and view other women who embrace Western standards of dress and appearance (and who are often the mothers of the newly veiled) as enslaved by value systems that view women as ornaments and plaything. |

tartar9: You are correct, it is not bad ; For women to be submissive to their husbands. A woman can call her husband "master" to show respect.Women should also be discouraged from prostitutions . It is Wrong for a man to beat himself or to hate himself. The bible says husband and wife are one and we should love our wives and not beat them or call them dogs. Allah SWT says: الرِّجَالُ قَوّٰمُونَ عَلَى النِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ وَبِمَآ أَنْفَقُوا مِنْ أَمْوٰلِهِمْ ۚ فَالصّٰلِحٰتُ قٰنِتٰتٌ حٰفِظٰتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللَّهُ ۚ وَالّٰتِى تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِى الْمَضَاجِعِ وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ ۖ فَإِنْ أَطَعْنَكُمْ فَلَا تَبْغُوا عَلَيْهِنَّ سَبِيلًا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيًّا كَبِيرًا "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. An-Nisaa: Verse 34) Volume 1, Book 9, Number 490: Narrated 'Aisha: The things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, "Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people)." I said, "You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away. for I disliked to face him." Volume 1, Book 9, Number 498: Narrated 'Aisha: It is not good that you people have made us (women) equal to dogs and donkeys. No doubt I saw Allah's Apostle praying while I used to lie between him and the Qibla and when he wanted to prostrate, he pushed my legs and I withdrew them. Can any sane person call his wife a dog? Why should someone compare a human being like himself to a dog? If a man is one with his wife, he should not beat her but treat her like part of him. Colossians 3:18-20 KJV Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. [19] Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. [20] Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Ephesians 5:28-31 KJV So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.
