Can A Pro Programmer/developer Answer This Question? by MediaPapi: 12:59am On Jan 14
Hi there,

I was wondering how much it would cost to build and maintain a movie streaming site like Netflix or crackle?

Your answer should take into account- hosting costs, costs to hire a programmer, time it will take, maintenance costs, e.t.c

We are taking about #3.5 million including the cost of server to be used.
Development time is 10weeks.
Chat me up, my team and I can assist with project implementation. 08143202358

A lot of factors need to be considered. You estimated audience on launch, number of movie files you are storing, do you plan to use a global CDN (using a cdn means your users get a better (lower latency) experience), do you have staffing, etc
All this and more will determine how much you would spend. Mind you the 3.5 million my colleague here mention can't even handle your server cost (1 year) for a medium sized streaming site.

With 6 million naira this can be achieved by me in 8 weeks. With server large enough to handle v.o.d

Thank you for taking the time to explain.

Estimated audience on launch will be 20,000. We show only our content.

How much (in your opinion) do you think it will cost to hire a team to build/maintain a streaming site with a few 100 videos (at first) hosted on cdn?

Budget like 3-5 million for development work and 3 million to host the application, videos and CDN for a year.

How will you cope with copyright issues? your site will be brought down if it gains recognition. It is illegal to host movies if you don't have the license to do so. it's a serious offence if you reside in an European country.
You don't have to spend much if you want to own a movie streaming site. There is a script built on laravel framework that searches for movies and descriptions automatically. You can use the script without directly hosting movies on your site, it can be customized to fetch movies from hosting companies using their API and imdb description.
I own one last year but traffic was a major issue. Making money through movie niche requires a very huge amount of traffic.

@OP Read this before you hire a programmer:

PRESIDENTIAL EXECUTIVE ORDER 005 - REGISTRATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FIRMS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PRACTITIONERS IN NIGERIA

Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) [CPN] was established by Act. No. 49 of 1993 (CPN ACT CAP C22 LFN 2004) and charged with responsibility of the control and supervision of IT profession and practice in Nigeria, quality assurance in computer education as well as developing local IT capacity in tune with national and international standards. The Act makes it mandatory for all persons and organisations seeking to engage, or engaged in the sale and/or use of computing facilities, and the provision of professional services in computing or services related to the use of computational machinery in Nigeria to be registered by CPN and licensed to carry out such services.

Consequently S.22 (2) of the CPN Act makes it mandatory for all individuals and firms that are engaged in the provision of computer/IT services to register with the Council (CPN).

This is in line with the Agency&lsquos mandate and also in compliance with the recent Presidential Executive Order 005 on Planning and Execution of Projects, Promotion of Nigerian Content in Contracts and Science, Engineering and Technology, signed into law by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

It is also worthy to note that contravention of Section 22 of CPN Act, CAP C22 LFN 2004 is an offence, punishable with both fine and imprisonment. Persons and organisations that are engaged in the provisions of IT services and Computer Science/IT training institutions are therefore advised to register appropriately with the Council (CPN).

Council wishes to state that it will not hesitate to bring to bear the full force of the law on unregistered IT Professionals, Practitioners, Institutions or Corporate Bodies.
