Just as a home is being child proof to prevent young children harming themselves and keeping them safe, we can equally pet proof our homes to keep our four-legged friend safe. There are many edible and non-edible dangers for your pet around your home.

Edible Dangers

Feeding your pet certain human food and drink which you may consider tasty treats for them may actually be detrimental to their health. Avoid sharing your food and drinks with your pets, even if they sit or stand staring at you sadly, and sweetly wagging their tails. Some of the more hazardous edible items include:
• Avocado. Avocadoes are mildly toxic to dogs and cats, but toxic to birds, rabbits, horses, and ruminants such as cattle, goats, and sheep)
• Caffeine (found in a lot of drinks such as coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks)
• Chocolate
• Grapes and raisins
• Garlic and onions
• Macadamia nuts
• Marijuana
• Tobacco products
• Xylitol. This is a sweetener found in some sugar-free chewing gum, sugar-free candy, cough syrup, mouthwash, and toothpaste)
• Yeast products (like raw bread dough)
• Alcoholic drinks and food products containing alcohol

If your pets ingest certain foods, it can lead to blockage in their digestive tract. Examples of such foods are cherry pits, avocado seeds, peach pits, corn cobs, and bones. These can get trapped in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines of your pet.

Non-Edible Dangers

Pets, especially dogs, will often eat non-edible items. Some non-edible items in or around your house or yard that may be unsafe for your pet include:
• Insecticides
• Antifreeze
• Cocoa mulch
• Fabric softener sheets
• Baits set for rats and mouse
• Ice melting products
• Chemicals for swimming pool
• Liquid potpourri
• Various household cleaners (including bleach and toilet bowl cleaners)
• Salt dough Christmas tree ornaments and play dough

Plants and Flowers

Some flowers and plants outside your home can be harmful to your pets, especially dogs, if they ingest them. Some cmmon plants and flowers that may be dangerous for your pet includes; Aloe vera, Daphne, Dogbane, Kalanchoe, Oleander, Poinsettia, Rosary pea, Mountain laurel, Chrysanthemums, Almond, shrubs and others.
