The Abia State University, Uturu has said the school will no longer condone indecent dressings from the students. Mkpa A Mkpa, the Vice Chancellor of the institution said this at the 28th matriculation ceremony of the university. He said his management team would not condone indecent dressings from the students, and warned that those caught would be dealt with in line with the decision already taken by the school's senate.

Some of the modes of dressing that would attract the sanction of the school authorities include faded jeans trousers, which incidentally is the fad among youth, baggy trousers as well tight fitting trousers and blouses.

"Senate has also outlawed all tight-fitting dresses, especially those that reveal private parts of the body such as mini-gowns and skirts, trousers and blouses with unusual slits at very odd angles," Mr. Mkpa said.

"We prohibit male students swaggering in atrocious, faded, baggy jean trousers that hang precariously at the brink of the buttocks, suspended by hands in the pocket and revealing the inner- often not clean boxer pant- all reminiscent of famished condemned Iraqi prisoners of war awaiting possible execution."

He, however, said that befitting blazers, neckties for males and scarfs for women, all in University primary colours have been approved for the use of the students; adding that while the neckties were already in use, the other ones would be available soon.

Access to education

The Vice Chancellor said that as part of the privileged 5000 admitted from the 50,000 that sought for admission into the university, the new students should avoid things that will lead them to forfeiting their admission.

He also allayed the fears of parents and students that the school's Institute of Arts and Science (IAS) programme was inferior to the federally administered University Matriculation Examination (UME) programme.

He explained that the IAS programme was created "with clearance and permission from the federal government, which spelt out for us guidelines for its establishment." He said the motive was to expand access to tertiary education for the people of the state to enable more students secure university admission.

The university was established in 1981 under the name, Imo State University, Uturu-Okigwe.

However, following the creation of Abia State in 1991 from the old Imo State, the university was ceded to Abia State and is now known as Abia State University, Uturu.

How are they going to decide which dressing is indecent or not? Is there a measuring scale?

A white elephant project if you ask me.

Let people dress in whatever clothing they feelk comfortable in as long as they are not naked.
