Snails belong to the Phylum Mollusca
and are animals whose means of
locomotion is aided by crawling with their
muscular feet; Snail is one of the few
animals without Red Blood Cells in them.
Snail is well enriched with copper (cu)
and Iron (Fe) and As a result, it is often
been recommended to patient who
suffers from anemia and insomnia to eat
as much as possible Snails. Aside this;
eating snails enhances blood formation
process since Snail meat can also be
used to purify the blood vessels against
all forms of contaminants, however;
Snails are also known as agricultural
pest of arable farm land because they
are heavy plant eaters, and they can eat
anything on the farmland in order to
enhance their survivability. Snail
constitute one of the major Agricultural
pest that is widely eaten by man.
Starting with a small scale Snail farming
in Nigeria
There are 2 breed-able species of Snails;
1. Arachachatina maginata and
2. Archatina achatina
Archachatina maginata : are
characterized by the procession of
bulbous shape with flat apex, they can
lay up to 40-100 eggs within a breeding
season and are usually bigger in size
when compared to Achatina achatina.
Achatina achatina: They are darker in
color, having pointed shaped Apex. They
are highly prolific with the capacity to
lay about 100-300 eggs in a breeding
season.
Giant Land Snail
Generally Snail lays their eggs in clusters
and their breeding season usually start
by the onset of rainy season till the
onset of the dry season. Snail will spend
about 10-15 Months to attain a fully
matured body size, depending on their
species. Snails are hermaphroditic in
nature (meaning that they have both the
male and the female sexual
characteristics in a single body)
Therefore, looking for either a male of a
female snail is a fruitless effort.
Archachatina maginata and Achatina
achatina constitute what is known as
Giant Land Snail
Housing a Snail
Collection of old tyres can be done for
the small-scale Snail rearing.
This can be done by the assemblage of
about 2-3 tyres on top of each other’s,
after which a material made of wire
mesh can be used as cover lid of the
tyres. The major function of the wire
mesh is to ensure adequate ventilation to
the enclosed Snails in the tyres.
NOTE: The following Tyre set-up should
be installed under a shady environment,
which can either be under the shade of
Banana plant, Cocoa trees, and Citrus
trees or under Mango trees.
The major tactic behind this is to ensure
an increase in the relative humidity of
the snail housing environment (as part of
the requirement of Snail rearing)
