Former President Obasanjo’s letter where he cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari against re-contesting for the 2019 general elections has been attracting lots of comments.
A pro-Buhari youth group, the Democratic Youths Congress for Buhari 2019, out rightly described Obasanjo’s letter to President Buhari as an open confrontation against the North and President Buhari.
But, the letter titled "THE WAY OUT: A CLARION CALL FOR COALITION FOR NIGERIA MOVEMENT, may not be against the north but a call for those concerned with developments in the country. It is a call for citizens; especially politicians to come together with an option for Nigerians.
It is a call for the THIRD FORCE; an alternative that is neither allied to the APC nor the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), through which they can run for elective offices.
The promoters of the Third Force were of the opinion that successive governments in the country had failed to deliver, arguing that the system needs a total overhaul.
These are prominent Nigerians and promoters include many aggrieved members of the APC and some sections of the PDP.
Obasanjo had accused Buhari of failing in the area of security, poor economic management that has increased poverty, condoning corruption in the inner caucus of the presidency, proclivity for nepotism in appointments and bulk passing amongst others. All these look similar to what Governor Nasir El-rufai complained about in the leaked memo.
Governor Nasir El-rufai’s memo pointed out all these except for wanton killing of herdsmen, which was not really rampant then.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, in September 2016, sent a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari arguing that the present government has made the situation in Nigeria worse than it met it by failing to be proactive in taking key decisions in a timely manner.
Green eagle media’s comparison of the similarities between former President Obasanjo’s letter and Governor Nasir El-rufai’s memo proves that the duo may be thinking in the same direction.
These similarities show that Governor Nasir El-rufai may have been aggrieved with this present administration at a point, just like former President Obasanjo.
With the reports of seven governors and about 20 senators responding to former President Obasanjo to actualise the coalition, will Governor Nasir El-rufai join the third force too?
Given that the presidency is zoned to the north, his desire to become the president and his relationship with former President Obasanjo, joining the third force may open a new chapter in the whole narrative of finding a viable option to run for the presidency.
