The Anambra State House of Assembly was on Tuesday threw into commotion following the refusal to pass relevant bills seeking autonomy for local government areas.

The bill, which was sent down from the national assembly having been passed by respective Houses of Senate and Representatives, suffered a setback as the members insisted that they must pass through public hearing.

Orient Daily learnt that immediately the speaker mentioned those provisions the House member representing Dunukofia State Constituency, Hon. Lawrence Ezeudu shouted that they should be approved but the Majority Leader, Hon. Victor Jideofor Okoye and others shouted him down that they should be stepped down.

Reading the position of the House after resolving into committee of a whole to consider the 28 altered provisions in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Rita Maduagwu, pointed out that two were not approved as they required public hearing and more consultation.

The assembly position forced members of organised labour, including members of NULGE, NLC, civil societies and others to murmur, accusing members of complicity.

Reacting, organised labour led by Anambra State Chairman of NLC and NULGE, Comrade Jerry Nnubia, described the act as self-serving, pointing out that they would continue to push for it.

Nnubia wondered why the lawmakers refused to hearken to the needs of the people at the grassroots they represent, as well as voted for them.

He said his group would meet to discuss other ways of engaging the lawmakers to speed up public enlightenment campaign and passage of the law as it requires ascension of at least 24 states of House of Assembly before it could become a law.
