You guys keep talking about bills and tax. Listen most of us here have 2 jobs, one job pays the bills the other job is for savings, simple. Moreover in Canada, if you earn less than 24k a year you are taxed next to nothing, or nothing at all.Tax in Canada is 16 percent of you pay. It's all about your lifestyle. I pay rent, pay my car bills, mind you I drive a 2017 Elantra, pay for my feeding, and I still have just over 4000 Canadian dollars in savings every month, cos I work 2 jobs. Meanwhile I am studying for my professional certifications while doing this. It is not a long term plan, it is just short term to make sure we are not wasting time here.
Chevronstaff:

Lol...U're quick to convert the salary to Naira but fail to calculate other expenses in the UK.. Do you know what it means to pay bills? Do you pay tax? plus other deductions At the end of the day , N500k is nothing when converted to pounds..
I will never advice a graduate earning good pay to leave Naija and move abroad to be A CLEANER OR A SECURITY GUARD...WTF

I am in Dubai. It's not hard getting a job if you know what's up. Don't listen to the lies. Yes the jobs don't pay well but there is also a way around that. So if you wanna come to dubai let me know. That your friend came back empty handed doesn't mean you would too.

Don't dare it..Dubai is mostly for tourist..I have a friend that went there and came back empty handed..Going there to look for job is hard unless you already got a job here before going.

Naija is a shithole yet people esp foreign institutional investors made between 75%-150% ROI playing with funds in the debt and capital market alone. I know this because I manage such funds for them

I was also abroad had a very good white collar job (earning 70K plus) but woke up one morning and decided to come back home and I don't regret it. I live in my own house in a serviced estate in a very serene part of Lagos state, have a lucrative side hustle and I thank God for what I have achieved so far a lot of which I wouldn't have achieved if I was still abroad.

I feel for Femi O because I have been in his shoes before and he sounds really pained probably because his contemporaries that he left in Nigeria are not doing bad (Saheed Balogun et.al) More so he wont be a security guard for the rest of his life and its very difficult to save considering that he has three kids to feed.

I belong to a semi formal think tank of professionals from different sectors in the country and we met recently to discuss 2017 events in retrospect and one thing dawned on me which is that there is no sector or business in Nigeria that does not have new or existing growth potential. Literally every sector still has opportunity for growth be it upstream oil and gas, automobile, retail and even real estate. However how difficult the barriers to entry is, there is still room for growth. I give you an example Dangote is building the largest refinery in Africa, I can bet you that such an investment decision will be dead on arrival in place like America, UK or any of the developed nations around. On the flip side our country and economy is still developing so there is room for growth and we also have the advantage of a youthful and growing population.

My barber makes an average of 10k daily cutting hair @ 300naira per person and this is excluding house calls and also sells hair treatment products and other accessories. He reminds me every month to sharpen the blade of my personal clipper which cost me 500 naira. He also does some entertainment stuff by the side like downloading movies and songs and selling to people at 50naira per download. He has a small portion of his shop where people can come and sit and charge their phones at 50 naira per charge. I use him as an example because I know when and how he started and I thank of that I was part of his growth story.

We are quick to blame our leaders when in the real sense we should also take a large portion of the blame. One for sure, we are not honest in any way. I have done cross borders deals with people over the phone without meeting face to face and the other parties have kept to their own part of the bargain but in Nigeria even with an iron clad agreement and all sorts of default covenants Nigerians will still look for one way or the other to renegage on the agreement and some will even do all sorts of unprintable stuff to default on the agreement.

There is dignity in labour but if we ask the same Mr Femi to come and run a security outfit in Nigeria (a sector that is very lucrative by the way) he will say God forbid..........I am a movie producer bla bla!

For me I think our inferiority complex, mentality about religion has contributed to the state of our nation. Here Pastors will speak prophesy into people's lives telling them that and I quote "by this time next week you will be the MD of your own company bla bla" and the person who does not even have the capacity to run a small team will begin to have grand and distorted illusions.

I know of someone that started exportation business (exporting hibiscus flowers)) to Mexico with just 750k and today the guy has a confirmed profroma to export over 120k USD of hibiscus flower to the US and he even got 30% upfront payment from the buyer guaranteed by his bank in case he fails to perform and guess what he got the contact to do the first shipment from an online forum and the rest as we say is history

I know we have our issues and to be honest I don't think that seemingly simple things like light, water, good roads should be an issue but hey even these simple necessities come at a cost abroad. I remember I was paying about 50-150 dollars for light alone and about 100 dollars for water back in the day. Now tell me how many people do that in Nigeria, the Discos tried to increase tariff so they can pay and improve power generation we all kicked against it. even to pay 3k bill is an issue for those that can afford. the same Nigerian will collect post paid electricity meters and still go ahead and bypass wires so they can enjoy free light and then lets not even talk about taxes esp from small business owners.

I also think that we need to recalibrate our educational curriculum and teach people to be more vocational and entrepreneurial instead of going through the four walls of a school to come and start looking for jobs. One thing I know for sure is yes we have our plethora of issues but Nigeria will be great again. I mean the chinese, lebanese, indians and others are coming here in droves and making millions so why cant we do same in our own country? Despite the so called recession, Shoprite revenue in Nigeria increased by 57% dwarfing sales from the rest of Africa combined in 2017 alone!

I think I have said enough and yeah..................God bless Nigeria!
Thanks for your inspiring comment. But let's not forget the fact you once lived in the US and you used to earn 70k dollars. That is not a small money. Thanks again.

Personally,I am not against anyone staying in Nigeria.Every man to himself I guess.Nigeria was not working for me instead I was frustrated with joblessness and empty pocket.
I work in a field where I get to meet new immigrants in Canada. I have met a lot of my fellow country men, some are professionals in the banking industry...engineers and when we chat, they always tell me things are getting out of hand and they had to relocate for their kids sake cos they are not encouraged for the future.I salute their courage to leave certainty (life back home and well paying jobs) for uncertainty (new country and starting afresh with no guarantees). Some of us did not make such tough decisions as we were jobless anyway so we had nothing to lose by relocating (it cldnt get any worse if it did not work out).
There are a lot of things missing in this conversation though. For me apart from the opportunities living in abroad offers me, I appreciate the fact that I can go to bed without worrying if armed robbers might visit my house over night. How about the ritualist lurking in danfo?I appreciate the fact that my power is 24.7 and if at all it will go off (which rarely happens)...they will announce in the radio.Few years ago,I fell ill spent like 2 weeks in d hospital on admission(saw doctors, specialist and lot of tests)..guess what? By the time I was discharged I did not pay a single dollar.visit to your doctor is free. I can go on and on and for me.Can any one quantify peace of mind?
Yes, you will pay bills and taxes. As those amenities are not free but for me I will gladly keep paying as long as I am getting value for my money.
Even though i can relate to Mr. Ogendengbe's experience I still disagree with his shithole comment.
Those that are staying...best of luck.
Those that are planning to leave:best wishes too.

I will tell you to shush without second guessing...

Nigeria is a failed system and I'm talking from experience...

At 26 I was a millionaire talking about 2001 and I gave people's life a meaning and helping people with hundreds of thousands until I had a terrible accident that catapulted me to square 0 as a result of the crazy health system that could not tend to me on a timely note and I had a nerve damage..what a country where human lives mean nothing compared to a country where firemen are called to save the life of a cat.

What am I driving at? you wrote that you left naija to go hustle abroad, made good money then came back to invest then you went ahead cursing the same white man country that gave you the opportunity to make money for your investment.

Do you think you are better than the average graduate in Nigeria with fantastic idea? why did you not raise that capital in Nigeria?

Don't get it twisted. .people make it from the scratch in Naija but very very few.

Nigeria is a country that will not do anything for you, will not make you useful for her and make you redundant to help yourself.

You think I envy most of these rich artists and billionaires cultists? Nigeria is a failed nation and we all need to pray for the country.

The problems of Nigeria are Nigerians. The America you are running to, you forget that it was the sacrifices of the people that made it what it is today. If they were always cursing it and running away, would it have been good?
If they were only thinking of themselves and families, they wouldn't have got to where they are. Now you want to run to reap people's sweat in another nation while you rain curses on your country.
It is good you are leaving. This country doesn't need cowards.
Nobody sows where he doesn't reap. If you sow curses, that is what you get. I tell the truth, with time you will curse the nation you are going to because it will come to a time when things won't be favourable.
The Indians, Lebanese and the Chinese came and made profit from Nigeria, but you as a citizen doesn't see the good things in the land because you have condemned it. From my conclusion, you're the problem of yourself not Nigeria.
If they ask you to bring part of your money as tax, you will decline, but you will pay higher taxes in another country. My friend, you can only reap where you sow. It is an unbroken universal law
Psalm 122:6

Thank God I changed my mentality!
Nigeria is blessed and there are soooo many great opportunities abound
Never saw it until I left the shore if this country
There my eyes was opened to what I took for granted and it’s a Money spinner abroad!
I just can’t help but to return home and start
Coming back to naija, I came with little or nothing
And that was 5 years ago!
But with good plan, dedication, hard work, honesty and most importantly Gods grace, I can boast of 2 nice cars, 2 buildings, nice apartment, many landed properties and a better life, im the CEO of my company, have people working with me, go to work at my preferred time and most time work from home!
To be honest, it has not been easy but I can tell you, it’s far better than washing plate abroad or working as a security outside!
We have our challenge here though! Light, security, poor health condition, bad roads, poor banking system etc, but believe me, those problems are someone’s biggest opportunity to make it big! Like I said we need use our brain!
If the likes of Dangote, Dantata, Adeniji, otedola etc stays in this country and make it, Who I’m I to run?

NICE STORY But not palatable to us.

you were given more opportunity as u traveled abroad there by you got loads of cash to by the NInch of yours.

oga wake up u live in an uncertainty country and u can never predict what will happen tomorrow.

and how much have you spent on electricity, water, security, health etc wake up.

the reasons why we run is because of basic amenity that is cheap there

And let me enlighten you a little, those you called basic amenities aren’t cheap at all! Yes! I need tell you the truth
What we pay here in naija is fucking too cheap and that is why it’s not readily available! Highest I get here for electricity per month is 10k.(not stable though) I fuel my gen with average of 2 k per day! Roughly 50k per month! Combine both, it’s still not up to what I pay for electricity a month abroad! You dare not use electricity anyhow else you cry at the end of the month! The comfort you think you get there you still have to do mathematics on it!
Do you know how much I buy a litter of fuel in Europe for your car? We buy for 145naira here and we complain (not up to 50cent).
You all know in naija everyone dig bore hole so we don’t pay for water! Do u know the bill for water a month there? Come and see how Nigerians do micro economics on resources they though it’s readily available! Sometimes I asked them so what’s the difference between here and there?
Doing winter u must heat your house most time with gas! Do you know how much they sell gas?
You better do your analysis well than thank God for naija!
My house rent there for a month will pay for a full year here with change remaining!
So what are we saying!?

I must commend your bold step to come back and invest..Not everyone is mentally lazy as you wrongly put it, Nigerians are talented people but the means, facilities, and avenues are not there. For instance, I want to start a business and there is no fund to do that..I have the idea but the means is not there. Would you tag me as been mentally lazy? You can share your business ideas with people so that they can tap into it..

Not all business need plenty cash to start
When I came back I hv less than 100k but I thank God where I am now! DM me if you want to know what I do

And for heaven sake why don't u want to pay for all the amenities u enjoyed or u think is a banana republic where u won't pay for electricity.

if I earn 1.5million equivalent of Nigeria money and I pay all my bills ranging 600k to 800k monthly I still got like 500more or less to save home,Oga wake up to reality and u know dee down u Nigeria is an insane society its just a colony of greedy and unfortunate people that's why we are here today.

God bless you my brother cos we hv similar stories
Many don’t see any good in this country and because of their myopic sense of reasoning, they can never amount to something no matter what!
A lizard in Nigeria can and will NEVER be a crocodile anywhere in the world!
No matter wher you go or where you are, if you don’t have the right mentality, even if you stay in the Whitr house, you will still complain.
Nigeria has so many potential and I just weep for those spending Hundreds of naira (some millions) that can be used to invest and Better thier life hereto run abroad all to end up becoming a slave!
Don’t get me wrong! If you are going for education, vacation or a professional work specification, it’s all a good idea! At least there’s no year I don’t travel out with my family specially for vacation or business trip!
But for those looking for a ready made wealth abroad thinking your breakthrough is in USA or canada or Uk or wherever, pls think again! It’s not as easy as you think!
I hv sooo many friends there we still communicate daily and many still express thier regrets. Lastly,
If you are hopeless here in naija and you have nothing to loose being a space in another mans land, it’s all good , you can move when the opportunity arrives BUT you are here, you have work u r doing, you can take care of yourself and family and because you see your friend snapping pictures in front of Whitehouse tagging you that he just had a dinner with Trump and because of that you sell your properties and preparing to relocate all of families abroad! Hmmmmmm,,, my brother think again.

GLOBALINF:

Hahahahaha..... you are not the only one has lived outside Nigeria. Do you know that Kuwaitis do not pay energy bills? Do you know that Libyans when Ghadaffi was alive didnt pay energy bills?
Nigeria is oil producing nation and yes energy should be cheaper here.

However, ordinary Nigerians want steady energy supplies and good roads, increase the taxes and the rates... we don't mind.

Stop defending the travesty of the Nigerian nation, its a gooddamn cesspit of corruption and poverty

Like I said I didn’t add overtime and a second job. Most of the under the table jobs don’t get taxed. And for the tax bro, I hope you know about tax refund? A friend of mine calculated his returns for this year and it’s almost $20k.
Bro what I am saying it that you will find jobs to do, whatever your bill is you can afford it plus more and most importantly the system over there is working...whatever you work for or pay for, you get the exact value plus bonus.

Obi, which kind security work and lot attendant you dey do, wey dey give you $3,500 / month after tax and bills? You sure say your bills include payment for accommodation and car? $72k per year doing security work?

Obi4gboy:
My brother, I work 14 hours a day, 6 days a week for security, 5 days a week for lot attendant. My sixth day is over time pay. Trust me when I tell you before tax and my bills, my pay from both jobs is 6300 Canadian dollars a month. After tax and my bills, I have just over 4000 dollars. Canadian dollars to naira is 282 to 1 naira. I worked in Shell for 5 years as contract staff, nothing much to show. In less than 2 years in Canada ,
I am already building an event center in Owerri. Trust me, if you are hard working, you will Excel here. And also, I am doing this even as a masters degree holder.

Deji, don't mind the bloody liar!
