I saw this post https://www.nairaland.com/4342624/please-how-improve-grades-cgpa#64985455 and I decided to help, Mods please find this useful

If you are looking for the best ways to study and make good grades as an Average student, then I will show you how to study and make good grades with ease. It wasn’t rocket science no more the moment I found out some tips that moved me from being an average student in college to topping the chart in my department.

While some students thrive on last-minute cramming of study books, this isn’t the best approach to making good grades as an average student.

Below are the best ways to study that you might want to check out and put into practice.

Find your motivation

No one would tell you, but this should be your first step before picking up your books to study. Motivation is the only force that would make you focus on what you intend reading. I attended a private university – so expensive, and I felt I wouldn’t want to let my parents’ money go to waste.

That was the motivation that propelled me, and other tips only helped me read the right way. There are so many other forces that could serve as your motivation;

- Fear of failure
- Competition from your peers
- Prospect of landing a great job with your good result
- Bragging rights
- Rewards from parents

Whatever would make you become motivated to read, just find it. No matter how boring the course might seem, your motivation would make it look attractive to you.

Keep Yourself Organized

I don’t read till about 3 weeks to the exam, then I bring out the reading beast in me. This is why I intend to show you the best ways to study. Being organized would help you stick to your timetable and know how you intend to cover up your syllabus.

I would always read from 8 am till 5 pm at the school library. Then I take a break of 2 hours, and then go back and read all night until 5 am in the morning. I was so organized that it became a part and parcel of me.

Research about your lecturer

Research is king! Before writing the exam of any professor, you should know how he sets his exams. This would help you read right, and know what to expect in the exam or test. I draw the analysis of most lecturers from their past questions, quizzes and assignments.

I check out the ways they prepare their exam questions, and I read according to their exam methods. It would make it easier to study when you already know the exam pattern to expect. This is not a guarantee that the exam pattern would change, but it stays the same in most cases.

Make use of your Syllabus

Not being able to study could be one of the roadblocks to studying effectively. One of the best ways to study is to make use of your syllabus and know what to expect in the exam. It would help you know the topics to cover, and you prepare well for them.

Write it down

Writing down core points in what you are studying is one of the effective ways to read and assimilate properly. You don’t read your textbook for an exam like you read a literary novel.

If you are the ‘visual’ type of student who can easily grasp the concept of study by drawing or diagrams, then this method should be one of your best ways to study.

Repeat it

Repetition is one of the ways to study effectively. After writing down the points you’ve jotted down, it is imperative to re-write them down again on a separate paper. This would help your brain recall it faster as it would in an examination situation.

Get rid of distractions

To study better, you should do away with distractions. Several times I have seen people complain that they can’t do without music while reading – this is bad. The brain functions best when it mono-tasks.

Listening to a song while reading would serve as a sweet and silent distraction to you, but you would know it. This is because the brain tries to process the song being heard, and also the book being read. Stick to one and get it completed.

Take a break

Back then at college, I would run around the reading class unclad alongside other crazy friends. This was our own way of taking a break to relax the brain and allow ideas and concepts to sink into the mind.

Learn to sing it

This is one of the most effective ways to study for subjects you have no interest in. It is mostly employed by female students most times. It helps you to memorize better especially for long items and listings.

Learn to have a good sleep

Unless the exam is the next day, learn to have a good night sleep. It helps the body rejuvenate and ready for the next day.

During exam days, it is necessary to find the perfect time to have a good sleep. I always had one exam per day, so I always sacrificed my night sleep to read, while I sleep during the day immediately after my exam.

Now you’ve known the best ways to study, you should also know that it takes discipline and dedication to get it done. These tips would surely transform you from an average student and make you top your class as you make good grades.

If you love your friends, please share this post with them

A student asked the following question

How do you read from 8-5pm, then all night, don’t you go to lectures? Don’t you have other activities that you do?

and Here is my candid reply

Few weeks (about 3 weeks) before your exams isn't a time to start attending lectures, unless something important is to be taught.
I use that period to read like a hungry dog. It is called Marathon reading. My strategy was cramming every possible thing about the course I could lay my eyes on (I just read to pass - which might not be your strategy).

The bottom line is that you have to do the following.

-Read massively
-Meet your senior colleagues for explanation in any of the courses you are having difficulty
-Solve past questions (I mean anyone you could lay your hands on)
-Read to know the course and also read to retain all you've learnt
-Know the lecturer's mode of marking his exams. Does he love word for word or he marks based on your contribution? It would help you know whether you should just cram the goddamn textbook and get out with an A.

If you are in 200l with a 3rd class or 2nd class lower, you may not come out with a first class again...

But you can comfortably come out with a second class upper (2.1) under one condition.

You should make first class in your last two years consecutively (It isn't difficult, trust me!!!)

I disagree with that 'read 3 weeks to exam'

From my experience...better to read a bit every day from day 1 of a new term/session....to the day of the exam.

3 weeks is late...especially if you are a university student, or postgrad...where time is money.

I think that this is clearly an individual issue, there are some people who read and retain everything that they read at once while others need to read and re-read in order to retain information and a vast number find it hard to retain what they read, that explains why there is a vast number of failures (3rd class and 2nd class lower graduates) in universities today.

I'll say just know what works for you if you are the type that finds it hard to read and remember or understand then I'll suggest you use reminders known as chips in the exam, don't make it too obvious, you can conceal it in your handkerchief, after all you did not make yourself that way so what can you do.

In a country like Nigeria where people look down on you if you don't come out with a first class or second class upper, just know thyself and do what you can to make that grade.

As for me I don't care when I can't retain what I read I use reminders in the exam hall (at least that's what I call them ) after all for Nigerian institutions na garbage in garbage out wink

Oga read ur book anywhere the lecturer set question blast it...

Some lectures that are insane, sadist, most of them don't even want to be lecturers but cause of condition (no job) they just say lemme do it like that, u will now see various blunders in ur note and in the board, fucking irritating, u would be like what is wrong with ma life, why is this kind of person teaching me.who did I offend.

True talk my dear, but the problem with Nigerian universities is that most of the time, someone won't be offered admission in wat he applied for. We have to learn how to love what is given to us

This is an appropriate way of study, one that guaranteed you not just a good result but the best result. There are study tips and tricks that you should be aware of. Whether you find yourself in high school, or college or at any higher institution, you should be acquainted with this study skills, tips, and tricks that I am about to reveal to you now.

Many students find it so difficult to study because their study is not well planned, they find it very easy to fail an exam because they fail to prepare. Some students studies but seem not to get the desired result from studying, this is because their study is not well planned.

A number of students are enviably hardworking, they can study so hard that their books begin to feel special. However, some of these students would make just average grades. It is a very painful situation to see yourself struggling with average grades when you read like a ‘’A’’ student. It is a limitation! This type of limitation cannot be broken by mere reading hard and hard until your brain cracks wide open. No! You need to read smart.

It is Time to Study Smart and No Longer Hard
It is high time that you develop a very smart study strategy. Now is the time. So start studying the right way. To end up with an A grade, you must have to be walking on the “A’’ path, road or way. You must have been studying smart. Like I said earlier, there are right and appropriate ways of studying, one that guarantees you an extraordinary result. Do not miss it out, keep reading below.

Study Tricks and Tips to Set you on the Right Track
Have you been attending the Laboratory of Knowledge ?:
The laboratory of knowledge is your classroom. In this laboratory, the knowledge is cooked royally and serve to you sharply, the level of strength you gained from digesting the food is now evaluated and use to grade you. If you find yourself learning “calculus.” There are myriad of knowledge to extract from the topic ‘Calculus’. But the level of knowledge needed for you to know is calculus determined by your lecturer and he or she would not tell you anything, but you would know that level by attending the class regularly.

Attending classes regularly can help you solve the following problems;

It helps you to easily determine the key points in any given subjects. This saves you the stress of reading a whole lot of textbooks without a destination.
It helps you to study for specific knowledge rather than general knowledge
Gives your study a focus
Enable you to understand the lecturer’s mind towards the subject.
You may even rightly guess out questions that are likely to be presented during tests and/or exams
It facilitates your study
You may find the topic interesting by listening to your lecturer continually talking about it. Passion plays an important role in an effective study.
Absorb and Process the Data Emanating from the Laboratory of Knowledge into Valuable Information:
You attend class regularly. Hurray! But do you know that so many other students attend class regularly and they are still very much average students? What went wrong? They may have missed out on the processing stage. Most students are in class but not in class. They are in class but their attention is divided. A larger part of their attention is at homes, in the party, about that girl or boy and all manner of distractions. So they won’t enjoy the benefits of attending lectures regularly even though, they were actually persistence in attending lectures.

To make the best out of every class, the following must be considered;
