MTN Leads Other Telecom Companies With 51.4 Million Subscribers In Nigeria by Realsmarttzy(m): 9:12am On Feb 14, 2018
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has published the most recent subscriber statistics of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry that worths $70 billion. The report shows that our telco operators lost 10 million customers, as they started year 2017 with 155 million but ended with 145 million. It also disclosed a 7% crash in the telephone density.

According to the statistics pit forward by the telco regulator—NCC, MTN is still having the upper hand with 36.2% market share and 51.4million subscribers as at last year ending. Globacom takes the second spot with 26.4% market share and 37 million subscribers, while Airtel is hot on their heels controlling 25.3% of the market portion (just 1.1% short of Glo’s) with 35.9 million subscribers. 9mobile has 12.03% market share with 17 million subscribers.

The 155 million subscribers available at the beginning of the year accompanied a teledensity of 110%. But within 365 days, a lot of subscribers dropped their telephone lines. An analyst suggests that the rise in use of Over-The-Top platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Skype, Facebook, etc., also contributed to the fall in the number of users of our telcos mobile services. That’s why they want NCC to block OTT services in Nigeria.
