Can You Really Protect A $1,000 Iphone With A $20 Case? by Opinionated: 11:18am On Feb 19, 2018

SUPCASE, the leading manufacturer of protective yet affordable cases for smartphones and tablets, is proud to announce that the Unicorn Beetle Pro (UB Pro) took first place in CNET’s “Best Case Scenario” drop test at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Like most modern devices, smartphones are comprised of many delicate components that can easily become damaged or broken after the slightest drop. Although some major name brands claim their devices get stronger and sturdier year after year, the truth is today’s phones are some of the most vulnerable ever. In fact, in a previous CNET drop test the $999 iPhone X cracked on the first drop and was later deemed by SquareTrade as the “most breakable” iPhone yet. This is due in part to the shift from aluminum to glass construction to accommodate wireless charging, but the result is a very expensive accident waiting to happen.

Enter CNET’s “Best Case Scenario,” where a dozen case makers participated in a live drop test at CES to find out which could survive the highest drop and truly protect our most precious possession. The test consisted of four nail-biting, gut-wrenching, edge-of-your-seat rounds where a gorgeous new iPhone X was dropped from 10, 12, 16, then 20 feet in the air onto a solid block of concrete. Each round saw cracked screens, discolored pixels, nasty scratches and scuffs, and each round the UB Pro’s iPhone X remained unscathed and fully functional.

By the fourth and final round, only three cases survived the mayhem: Pelican’s Shield case, Zizo’s Bolt case and the SUPCASE UB Pro in a three-way tie for first place. However, the UB Pro boasted the lowest price point at just $19.95, compared to the Zizo Bolt’s $34.95 and Pelican Shield’s $59.99. Overall, the Unicorn Beetle Pro vastly outperformed cases that were much more expensive at an average $42 — more than twice as much as the UB Pro.

“Our mission has always been to create cases that not only can you trust to protect your phone, but are actually affordable,” affirmed SUPCASE founder and CEO Jason Li, who offered his own iPhone X for the infamous drop test. “Our phones are already expensive enough, and the reality is your case doesn’t have to be. A lot of times what you’re paying for is the brand name and not necessarily a guarantee of protection.”
