What Is Wtmpx File In Solaris OS And It Is Safe To Delete It? by jorna: 3:46am On Mar 06, 2018
Issue Description
Q:
Current system has a very limited hard disk space.
We have observed that in /var/adm there is a huge file called wtmpx.
What is this file? It is safe to delete it or compress it in order to free hard disk space?
Alarm Information
Null
Handling Process
A:
The wtmpx file is used to determine the history of user logins and reboots. If you login, and logout very frequently, in a few months that file can grow to occupy a lot of space.
Its safe to delete it, even if you might lose the data mentioned above.
You can of course rotate and compress it, that way you will save diskspace and keep the data, in case that is necessary:
cp /var/adm/wtmpx /var/adm/wtmpx.old
cp /dev/null /var/adm/wtmpx
gzip /var/adm/wtmpx.old
In that way you can save a lot of space, depending on your system.
If you dont need the data, you can just delete it instead of compressing the file. There is no harm to the system.
This works on both Solaris 8 and Solaris 10
