Government at all levels have been urged to support accelerated actions towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in both rural and urban settings.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Osun state chapter of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day celebration.

In the statement signed by the association’s chairperson and secretary, Mrs Motunrayo Ayegbayo and Mrs Florence Babasola respectively, NAWOJ said stakeholders must see the celebration as a way to galvanise for a future that is gender equal.

According to NAWOJ, the theme for this year’s celebration that states “Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women’s Lives” is timely as the rate of poverty among women in our society is becoming alarming everyday.

NAWOJ however challenged women to believe in themselves and support one another whenever the need be.

Teachers and caregivers were also encouraged to use the celebration to educate and inspire children about the roles of women in the society.

While stressing the need for women to always support and celebrate men who make family a priority, NAWOJ opined that men should also encourage women in attaining enviable positions in the society.
