A Bill for a law to provide for the control, movement and grazing of livestock in Anambra State and other matters connected there with scaled second reading at yesterday’s plenary of the State House of Assembly.

The Bill was sponsored by the member representing Anaocha -Two Constituency, Mr. Charles Ezeani.

According to Mr. Ezeani, the Bill seeks to regulate cattle rearing in Anambra State with a view to arresting incessant massacre of innocent citizens by the herdsmen.

The Lawmaker further explained that it will put to rest, open grazing by confining cattle and dog rearers to designated places as any cattle found operating in unapproved places shall be impounded.

In his contribution, the Majority Leader, Chief Victor Okoye, revealed that the bill, if passed into law, will give legal backing to establishment of ranches for rearing of cattle, generate income for the state and create more cordial relationship between herdsmen and their host communities.

Speaking in favour of the Bill, the Chief Whip, Chief Lawrence Ezeudu, noted that the It will prevent herdsmen from encroaching on farmlands, just as his Anambra East Constituency counterpart, Chief Obinna Emenaka, noted that it will help to curtail the excesses of herdsmen and keep the environment clean.

Others who spoke in favour of the Bill include Hon. Dr Pete Ibida, representing Njikoka-Two constituency, his Idemili south counterpart, Mr. Chuka Ezenwune and the member representing Njikoka-one, Dr Timothy Ifedioramma as well as Mr. Uchenne Okafor of Ayamelum Constituency, while the Speaker of the Assembly, Barr. Rita Mmaduagwu, read out the Bill and called for a voice vote

Good news. Southeast states should also follow the example of Akwa Ibom by importing high grade cows to boost the economies of the region. When the rest of Nigeria begin to see the quality of cows especially milk and meat produced by us through ranching, the association of killers in Nigeria will be put to eternal shame.
Breaking the economic power of fulani herdsmen can be achieved very easily through well organized ranching system like those found in Europe.
