Nigerian government to begin teaching of science, mathematics in local languages.

Is the learning challenge faced in the country a function of the language used or the approach, method, facility available to cater for the needs of the learners?

If they learn mathematics and sciences in their mother tongue while in primary and secondary school, will they write UTME in those languages?

If they get admitted into the University, will lecturers use the mother tongue to teach those courses? What then happens to Chibuzor who grew up in Enugu and got Admitted to University of Ibadan? How will he cope? I bet he'll experience an academic culture shock and maybe unable to handle it.

How does this learner who failed to learn science in English while in his 9-3 education stage compete with his peers from CIS, Greensprings etc when it's time to do the needful. Especially when the plan is to translate textbooks to the local languages alone.

While this may look like a well thought plan to increase the number of kids learning in schools, I feel strongly that it's only going to deepen the inequity in our education system.

PS: Policies drive change, a well thought policy solves a problem for the long term abeit springing up fresh problems. A policy with numerous holes at its inception needs revisiting.
