HYPOCRITES AS ANTI-TAX CHAMPIONS

In a rather shameless display of comedy of errors, a group of lawyers, under the aegis of the National Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, a.k.a. Tiger Branch marched from Ikeja Roundabout to the Lagos State House of Assembly to protest the review of the state’s Land Use Charge (LUC) on Tuesday 13th March 2018.

Interestingly and in a curious twist of events, these champions have been shown to be tax evaders, or at best have been grossly under-paying for their properties. This has been revealed in an exclusive document obtained from the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS). For instance, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, Barrister Adesina Ademola, Ogunlana, who led the protest pays a paltry pay-as-you-earn tax of N5,000 per annum. Same goes for the vice-chairman, Carol Ibharuneafe who also pays N5,000 annually as tax. More shocking is the revelation that the likes of the NBA Branch Secretary, Muna Esegine, the Treasurer, Coco-Bassey Thelma, the Social Secretary, Jemerigbe Eyinmofe and the Welfare Officer, Tanimowo Oluranti were not paying taxes as at 2009 as revealed by the same exclusive document! Others who paid taxes that cannot equate to liveable status are the Assistant Secretary, Adedokun Issa Akanji (N1,250), and the Publicity Secretary, Akinwale Ajibola (N15,000).

This sad and sordid scenario throws up some burning questions. Do these gentlemen of the bar stand on any high moral ground to hold protests against a government that means well for the good people of Lagos State? NO!

Truth be told, tax payment is an internationally agreed sustainable source of revenue generation. Anyone that does not support it certainly does not mean well for the state in particular, and Nigeria at large.

Property tax is normal in most functioning society i know. And they did not wait to solve all their problems first before collecting the taxes neither did they plug ALL the leakages before enforcing tax collection. Some of the advanced countries even had poll taxes. That is, you pay a tax before you are allowed to vote though it was later discarded.
All these excuses for avoiding tax payments hold water.

Yes bro... I support payments of tax... its very important.... buh you can't increase tax payment to be siphoned by government thieves, without trying to put the necessary things on ground.... the tax being paid before, what has been done with it??

Cut the crap! angry People are NOT against the property tax. They are against the arbitrary abnormal increases in such property taxes. Afterall, Land Use Charge (LUC) did not start today. But when someone like my client who paid 78,000 naira as tax last year is suddenly billed almost 400,000 naira as LUC for the same property, then it is extortion! Do they expect landlords to steal to cover this increment? shocked

Mixed Reactions Trail Lagos New Land Use Charge Law | Posted by BREAKING NEWS on MARCH 7, 2018 |

The President of the Nigeria Employer Consultative Forum (NECA), Mr. Larry E. Ettah, at a press conference, said, “The recent amendment of the land use charge law is a classic case of insensitivity, alienation and gross disregard of the current state of wellbeing of both corporate entities and residents.”

NECA hinted that the organised private sector (OPS) would do everything legal and legitimate; including social resistance, to challenge this “unfair and unjustifiable law.”

Also an anonymous resident said, “I have just received the land use charge notification for this year; it has gone up 450 per cent. I have looked at the basis for calculation and not only has the percentage rate increased from 0.394 to 0.761000, they have valued the house far in excess of its market value to maximise revenue,” the resident said.

“Who hikes taxes by 450 per cent with 11 days’ notice? To compound matters there’s a threat of penalty payments ranging from 125 per cent to 200 per cent of this bill if payment isn’t made between April and August. How on earth can we continue like this?” the resident asked.

According to the Coalition of Real Estate Investors and Surveyors in Lagos State, after its thorough analysis of the LUCL 2018, Owners-Occupiers are expected to pay a token percentage of 0.076 per cent of the value of the assessed property. https://breaking.com.ng/nigerianews2017/mixed-reactions-trail-lagos-new-land-use-charge-law/
