Tottenham are facing losing in-form winger Son Heung-min for two seasons - because he is legally required to spend time in the South Korean Army.

The 25-year-old must complete 21 months of military service before he turns 28 under Korean law - which means he would have to start in July 2019.


Spurs would therefore be without Son, when he would be approaching his footballing peak age, for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns.

Son could yet be handed a free pass from his conscription with the Korean government allowing any Olympic medalists or Asian Games gold medalists to swerve the rule.



That law can be extended to any sporting excellence, with Son not a member of South Korea's football bronze medal at London 2012.

He could be placed in their Asian Games squad in Indonesia later this year, which would see him miss the start of the next Premier League season.

However, even if Son is allowed to avoid two years in the armed forced, he would still be mandated to do four weeks of basic military training, engage in the sports field for 34 months and be placed on the reserve roster.



According to a report in The Sun , if he refuses to join up with the Army Son would face a jail term, with over 400 people currently imprisoned for desertion.



Son is currently on a red-hot goal streak having scored six times in his last four appearances - adding to his 18 strikes this season.

He is almost guaranteed to be representing his country at the World Cup this summer, with South Korea facing Germany, Mexico and Sweden in Russia.
