No fewer than 698 pieces of army camouflage, consisting of 500 pieces of military bullet-proof jackets, 198 pairs of uniforms and 40 hats have been seized by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Customs Area Controller, MMAC, Lagos, Mr. Michael Adewole, while disclosing this at a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, said the illegally imported military wears, brought into the country three days ago, were suspected to be plans by some ”evil elements and corrupt politicians” to win elections at all cost during the coming 2011 elections.

Meanwhile, the Customs boss also revealed that authorities in the United States of America had seized about $1.4m cash from an unnamed Nigerian couple at an American border post on Friday morning.

The two sets of military camouflage were imported aboard Saudi Arabian Airlines from an unnamed country in the Middle East, and aboard Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, Turkey respectively.

The CAC said that investigations were already going on in collaboration with the Directorate of Military Intelligence and other security operatives to unravel those behind the importation

He said, ”It is unfortunate that this is happening in our country. All this can be traced to the preparations for the 2011 elections. We discovered that these military camouflages were not imported by the Nigerian Army but by elements who have wicked and ulterior motives. These people are out to maim and kill. We are preaching that we should follow one-man, one-vote system, but some people are planning something else.”

The Customs boss said the camouflage kits would be handed over to the Nigerian Army while investigations continued.
