Barefooot boys at Hietalahti harbour, 1908. This place looks the exact same today, only the children don't go barefoot anymore.

These buildings are probably still there today, Europeans just keep adding value(Renovations)to them without demolishing because those structures were all planned by their Predecessors so no need for major demolitions but Here in Nigeria we don't even have good housing structures, we moved swiftly from mud houses to modern Houses without Planing. People just build houses anywhere anyhow as long as it's your land and now it's so hard to navigate through cities, no standard whatsoever.

Most of them are still around, except the cities destroyed in WW2. Almost nothing historical remains in Hamburg today, everything was completely burned to the ground.

Ancient Byzantines built the most resilient structures, most everything built by Justinian's architects in the 6th century still stands today. Hagia Sophia withstoood the earthquakes that wiped out half of the city over the centuries. Iranian and Ottoman Islamic architecture has wonders, grand palaces and mosques. Moors built some magnificent buildings in Spain, like the Alhambra palace.
