Chinese manufacturer Huawei is launching its latest flagship smartphone, the Huawei P20 Pro. In addition to the P20 and P20 Lite, the aim is to set new standards with the new top model and, above all, focus on the camera. This offers, among other things, a 40-megapixel sensor, which is likely to remind us of the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The Huawei P20 Pro is impressively equipped, especially in terms of camera. The device will bring a combination of three rear camera sensors, whereby Huawei once again surpasses itself and lets one of the sensors work with a total of 40 megapixels. It is also the main camera sensor that should give the P20 Pro, whose codename is “Charlotte”, enormous zoom capabilities.

Specifically, Huawei promises a “hybrid zoom” with up to 5x magnification, bearing in mind that the company is talking about “hybrid” zoom. In the past, this meant combining an actual optical zoom with a digital magnification to achieve an overall higher zoom capability when combined.

As we learned from previous leaks to the P20 Pro, the device physically “only” provides a 3x zoom, using the second main sensor, which is a kind of telephoto lens that resolves to eight megapixels. If you take the new top model so a photo with five times magnification, the additional image information that provides the 40-megapixel sensor, combined with the data of the telensensor, so ultimately a five-fold magnification with almost identical very high quality achieve. How good the results are in practice remains to be seen.

The Huawei P20 Pro combines sensors with aperture sizes between F / 1.6 and F / 2.4, although it is still unclear which of the sensors works with which aperture. In addition, Huawei relies on a system called “Light Fusion”, although it is still unclear what exactly is meant. It would be conceivable that one works simply with Oversampling, as it was already the case with the Lumia 1020 with its at that time insanely appearing 41-megapixel-Kamera the case. Of course, the triple-cam of the Huawei P20 Pro also carries a Leica branding, after all, the German camera manufacturer has again contributed to the development and contributes its know-how in software, so as to bring new effects and a presentation with a certain ” Leica Touch “. According to XDA-Developers, where they have examined a ROM of the P20 Pro, the camera offers a slow-motion function, which can record like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Sony Xperia XZ2 with 960 frames per second. The resolution is at 720p at the same level of the S9, but below the 1080p resolution, which can use the new Sony flagship.

On the front sits on the P20 Pro as the smaller model P20 also a 24-megapixel camera, which should also offer “Light Fusion”, which is also on the already officially launched in Eastern Europe in the market Huawei P20 Lite on board and generally a clear to enable better performance in low light. In addition to its camera, the Huawei P20 Pro also has a display that should draw attention to itself. Thus, the manufacturer installed here a whole 6.1-inch OLED panel, which is held in 19: 9 format. The screen resolves with 2240 x 1080 pixels and has thus been plugged in to cover almost the entire front of the new top smartphone.

Huawei also introduces a “notch” on the upper edge of the display, unlike Apple’s iPhone X, which does not integrate a laser scanner to identify the user. Instead, “only” the front camera, the earphones and the distance and brightness sensors are housed here. There is still room at the bottom of the device, as Huawei has re-installed its fingerprint reader on the front panel, which is designed to quickly and reliably log in the user. The technical basis of the Huawei P20 Pro is the Huawei Kirin 970 Octacore SoC, known from the Mate 10 Lite and the Honor View 10, with its four ARM Cortex-A53 cores with up to 1.8 GHz and four powerful Cortex-A73 cores that reach up to 2.36 GHz. The chip also brings the so-called NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which allows various features based on artificial intelligence. Huawei uses these again for the automatic recognition of image motives and environmental conditions, in order to select in each case the optimal attitudes when using the camera.

In Europe, the Huawei P20 Pro will probably only be available in a memory variant, in which one unites six gigabytes of RAM with 128 GB of internal Flash memory, the latter probably back to UFS technology to ensure high transfer rates. An expansion of the memory is not provided for a previously published manual for the more expensive models of the P20 series. Despite the photo focus you have to get along with 128 GB. In other regions of the world are also offered according to previous reports, variants of the P20 Pro with 64 or 256 GB of flash memory.

The point is here by Gigabit-ac-WLAN, like in dual-band mode, via Bluetooth 4.2 (BT 5.0 is apparently missing) and NFC. The P20 Pro supports a total of 31 LTE tapes, including the Band 28 in the 700 megahertz band. Thanks to the very broad LTE support, the P20 Pro, like its smaller sister model P20 with a 5.8-inch display, should be usable practically anywhere in the world. Of advantage is certainly the fact that the device will be available on a wide front with dual SIM support, even if it should continue to give a single-SIM version. In addition, the device also supports USB 3.1 with DisplayPort via its USB Type-C port, which is why the Huawei Mate 10 Pro familiar desktop mode is again available for use when connected to an external display. OTG support is also on board. Huawei, however, has obviously also deleted the headphone jack, because in the future, the delivery includes USB-C headphones and a corresponding adapter from USB-C to 3.5 mm

Like the Mate 10 Pro, the Huawei P20 Pro is IP67 certified and can survive up to 30 minutes in half a meter of water without damage. The device is quite thin despite the extremely high-resolution and therefore probably quite large camera sensor with 7.65 millimeters, which is probably due to the back of the glass. Despite the use of aluminum as a frame material and glass on the back of the Huawei P20 Pro but probably does not have wireless charging. The weight is 174 grams. As the operating system runs here, the current Android 8.1 “Oreo”, which is once again provided with Huawei’s in-house user interface EMUI, whose version number also rises to 8.1. What innovations in the course of the update catch, we do not yet know. In general, despite all the leaks, a few secrets may remain, especially concerning the software

Who wants to call the Huawei P20 Pro at its launch, which will probably be very soon after its launch on March 27, 2018 his own, will in future have the choice between the colors Ceramic Black, Midnight Blue and “Twilight”, the latter probably one between Purple and turquoise iridescent coloring is reminiscent of flip-flop finishes on car paints, which similarly change their color according to the angle of light. The P20 Pro, at least in Europe, probably anything but cheap: Proud 899 euros, according to our findings, the official price recommendation. But the customer probably gets the currently highest resolution camera unit on the market, a triple zoom – and as many cameras on the back of a smartphone as never before. The whole thing is paired with a huge battery and a correspondingly long battery life as well as a decent amount of storage.
