Anambra State Government has announced its plans to soon commence the rehabilitation and beautification of all the 35 slaughter houses in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Leo Imoka, disclosed this in Awka, during a workshop organized for the veterinary workers, butchers and other stakeholders. He said the programme was targeted at promoting quality public health through delivery of wholesome meat products to the populace.
Imoka challenged staff of the Veterinary department to work towards ensuring that only healthy and sound animals were slaughtered in the abattoirs, just as he solicited for the collaboration of the butchers as well as livestock dealers to achieve this.
Delivering a lecture titled, ‘The contributions of veterinarians and veterinary public health to human health in Nigeria’, a Varsity Don, Prof. Chukwudozie Ezeokoli, underscored the need for all animals to be inspected before being slaughtered. He encouraged veterinary doctors to strive towards improving human health by ensuring that the food and meat distributed to the public were not contaminated, control of animal diseases, as well as improving their living standard.
In his reaction, President of Anambra State Butchers Association, Chief Felix Ikenga, appealed to livestock dealers to maintain good relationship with fulani herdsmen and encouraged them to cooperate with government officials for enhanced service delivery in the state.

Earlier, the Director Veterinary Services Anambra state, Doctor Dan Obele, said the professional continuing education workshop was an annual event approved by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, to assist animal health providers to be acquainted with modern technologies in veterinary public health, surveillance and control of diseases.
