The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Friday, March 30, said it has imported $5.8 billion (N2.09 trillion) worth of petrol since last year. The group managing director of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru, said the petrol - about 9.8 million metric (tons) were imported into the country to combat the last fuel sacristy, Vanguard reports. Baru while speaking at a public hearing by the Senate committee on public accounts said the corporation carried out the massive importation in fulfillment of its statutory role of supplier of last resort to ensure that Nigerians do not suffer as a result of product unavailability.

Represented by the chief operating officer, finance and account, Abdulrazaq Isiaka, the GMD said the NNPC's move to purchase the large amount of fuel has helped in reducing the sufferings of Nigerians. He said the intervention became necessary after the inability of major and independent oil marketers to import fuel due to its high landing cost.

He said the cost of the product also made recovery and profitability difficult. The GMD also noted that cross border smuggling due to price disparity between Nigerian and her neighbouring countries has remained serious challenges in the quest for fuel queue-free situation in the country. However, the chairman of the Senate committee, Matthew Uroghide, in his response said the public hearing was a part of the Committee’s duty to find lasting solutions to the problem of fuel scarcity in order to make life easy for all Nigerians.

The House ad-hoc committee led Danlami Kurfi was set of by the lower chamber to investigate all the activities of staff of the Nigerian Petroleum Marketing Companies, and staff of government owned depots Kurfi during one of the probe sessions called for documents of sales made to independent petroleum marketers.
