As well as I appreciate your write-up, one thing I want to point out is that we have many people wanting different things. If you have 5sec for a CV others have more than that to look for what they want.

Sometimes the information that the CV represent is more than how its written. Some may not be written badly but if you are looking for the one that suit your own taste by how well it was designed you may have missed out on a more qualified person with minimal design. Lets try and read through and not scan through as a human resource personnel

Can't dispute that.

It's a competitive market with more applicants than there are jobs to go around and has nothing to do with imaginary witches.

you may end up seeing your CV as a suya paper.
I don't really know how important CV is in Nigeria. I got my first job without even applying when I was in Nigeria. I wrote application a week after I resumed.
There are a lot of factors to consider, pray hard for favour.

Great Points, Mr. Patrick.

Besides these ones you mentioned, I think another reason some people don't get invites is spiritual. We are Africans, and whether we agree or not, there could be spiritual factors (Witches, etc) responsible for one not getting interviews.

There's this friend of mine, a 2:1 Economics graduate from a Federal Uni. For 3 straight years after completing his NYSC, he couldn't secure an interview. This is someone who applies for nothing less than 5 openings daily. You can't tell me it's mere coincidence.

I won't go into details, but this guy finally got a breakthrough after series of deliverance.

In conclusion, village people can prevent one from getting interviews.

It's a competitive market with more applicants than there are jobs to go around and has nothing to do with imaginary witches.

This whole idea of demonizing our poeple in the village where we come from simply because we fail at some point in life is lame and has created market for so called deliverance merchants.

Hi guys, I am back again, and I am that Human Resource Specialist with more than 10 years experience. I am here to continue giving insider tips on what goes on at the back-end after we’ve received thousands of applications from zealous job seekers.

Have you ever had an experience like this?

- You see a job role you are well qualified for.

- Then you decide to apply.

- You pick your CV and quickly fill out the necessary details on the job search form.

- You scribble down some words as your cover letter.

- Then you click the send button and check your Email every day, hoping to get a call back – yet nothing happens.

In most cases, the job advert might have come with a lucrative salary, and you wouldn’t want to be left out. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and yet you hear nothing from the advertisers of the job. Boom!!! Game over for you on that job.

This same thing happens to you on other job adverts, and you assume that you are under attack from your village kindred. This might be the last time I will tell you this, so make sure you take action.

I will show you several reasons why you don’t get interviews after submitting your applications. It might be simple to you, but you should find a way to fix it ASAP.

Your CV looks like a Battleground

When I mean battleground, I mean it literally. Most simply don’t know how to write a CV; and instead of employing the services of a professional CV writer, they go ahead to just write that way.

You don’t play trial and error with something as important as your CV which is your professional personality on paper. Writing of CV should have a very clear format with specific procedures.

When I pick up a CV, there are certain areas I look out for. If I can’t capture it within the first 5 secs, I drop the CV so fast. This might actually be one of the reasons why you don’t get interviews after your job applications.

Downloading Sample Formats from the Internet

The same format you are about downloading has been downloaded by several other users. These same users will apply for the same job – in most cases, and we Human Resource Managers will get the same CV format from several people.

So remember; before you check up on Google, other people have done the same and the same format is getting saturated.

Writing your CV with a mobile phone

If you don’t have a laptop to help draft your CV, I encourage you to get someone to help you do it. Unless you’re confortable getting a job as a bar man, then you should stop reading and focus on other things.

No Human Resource Manager opens a CV with his phone. The truth is that when you format a CV with a mobile phone, the layout comes out completely haggard when viewed from a computer.

N.B: Please don’t ask a cyber café girl to help you design a CV; they have little or no idea of the 7-seconds rule of crafting a CV. I suggest you employ the services of a professional to help you to do justice to it.

Your CV isn’t tailored to any Job Role

Most times when I pick up CVs from my desk to scrutinize, I see CVs that has more than 7 job roles in it. When you do this, it simply means one thing; “You don’t come out as a professional in any career sector.” And unless you are pretty luck, no one would send you an invite for an interview.

You should be a master of a job sector in your CV, that make you come out as a pro in the eyes of employers.

Here is a quick question: “Would you hire a jack of all trade for an important position, or an expert in such position?” Your answer is as good as mine. The same way you feel are exactly the same way employers feel when they see such a resume.

Getting interview invites should be the least worries of any job seeker. But if your Professional Personality (CV) isn’t good looking, you may have a hard time scaling through. I have written and I have seen exceptional CVs, and I believe you deserve one.

Watch-out for my next post, "How To Write A CV Without Prior Work Experience."

The truth is many of the so-called HR we have in the country today won't get a job in a standard international firm because they have this "oversabi" attitude. Sometimes, the CV you send might be accepted in a place like Google Inc. but our HR with reasons best known to them claim that the CV isn't standard enough and ends up hiring those who aren't fit for the job

I remembered paying so called professionals to rewrite my CV. what I got isn't worth it. I still use my the one I edited myself till date with occasional updating any time I'm applying. I edit to suit the role I'm applying for .. I believe you alone can rewrite your CV.

The bold is a wrong reasoning. That you fell into a wrong hand is not enough reason to arrive at such a conclusion. Every profession has got quacks, so CV writing is not an exception. If you can write a good CV yourself, then go ahead and do that. Otherwise, seek help.

You don't have to pay. You can seek help from friends or relatives.

Simple, you know someone in the company, and for your information that your recruitment is the reason Nigeria remains the way it is today. No recruitment advertisement whatsoever and you were given the job.

There was advert , I never said it was not advertised , and I was interviewed, and I was well qualified for the job. If I was not the kind of person they needed I would not have been recruited. It was based on recommendation.
The company never regretted it because after I left, I became a consultant to that organization, l took the company to a whole new level.
My first job in the U.S followed the same pattern, so it is not a Nigerian thing. When you develop youself continually job will look for you and not the other way round.
Today I employ people into my business not based on how they organized their CV but what they actually know and can do and it has really helped my business.
I hope you are OK with this? I won't respond to any mention again please.

Sorry o, but just wandering how you got interviewed without writing an application letter in the first place ( in this same naija)but you don't need to answer that question though. We all understand how it went down.

This is another reason. I shared this shortly before WAEC vindicated me. For those that are in teaching field, you can attest to this. Some weeks back, WAEC banned the use of private school teachers to conduct its exams. To show that most private schools are surviving by cheating during exam in order to justify the "killer school fees," they kicked against it.
What I mean here is that it does not matter what is in your CV because of the corruption in Nigeria. Schools that are into this don't care about who they employ since they can easily bribe those invigilators and cheat during exam.
