I do not want to sound scary; but of course, there is a possibility that you may never get a job in Nigeria as the situation presently is. Yes, let it sink in; you may never ever get a job in this country. But, before you begin packing your bags and considering a permanent relocation to ‘Eureka’, you should know the four factors I believe can prevent you from a getting a job in Nigeria. Some of these factors are dependent on you, giving you absolute control over them; the other factors are Nigeria-dependent and requires some active maneuvering on your side to surmount the obstacles. Below are the four factors:

THE CERTIFICATE IS MORE OF A BARRIER THAN A CATALYST
In the present age, employers have become increasingly interested in the personal capacities of prospective employees much more than they are interested in the contents of their certificates. Unfortunately however, the brilliant academic grades of many of today’s graduates have given them a false sense of superiority over every other job seeker whereas, more than certificate is needed today. Soft Skills (Communication, Teamwork, ‘Teachability’ etc) Knowledge of the workplace, job-related practical skills, Versatility (ability to function in various ranges of responsibility) and other non-academic skills are now very important in the defense of certificate.

If you are one of those job seekers who believe it is enough to have good grades on your certificate and nothing more, you must think again; this false belief will block your chances of getting a job. You need skills; practical skills so that your fine grade does not end up a waste.

CAREER INDECISION AND RANDOM APPLICATIONS ACROSS SEVERAL INDUSTRIES
There is an old saying that a Jack of all trades is a master of none. If you have not made any conscious career decisions and clearly defined what you desire to become in your career pursuit, you may end up getting no job no matter how hard you try. The hidden reality here is, if a career path is your decision and you are passionate about towing that path, you will willingly seek more knowledge, acquire more capacity and develop deeper understanding of the career area. This clearly defined career path will help you guide against random application for jobs that could be exhausting and unrewarding.

You must choose a clear career path, pursue it with all your strength and your efforts at being excellent in the career will carry you through any job interview that you may have to face.
