The staff of Abia State polytechnic, Aba decided to embark on a strike action from Monday 9th April over 10 months salary arreas after series of promises by the management to pay the outstanding arreas but to no avail.

To their surprise, on Thursday the management issued the attached memo to all the departments of the school threatening sanction on any staff who decides to join the strike action.

I was really astonished reading this memo to workers being owed 10 months salary and being threatened to swallow the bitter pill and keep moving.

How have these people been managing to carter for their families all these while remain a mystery.

My neighbour who lectures in this institution cried when her kids were sent home for school fees earlier this year while a tricycle (Keke napep) rider was able to clear his own kids school fees in one payment.

Funny enough the acting rector of this institution, Prof. Friday Eboh is rocking a 25000 naira daily suit for over a year now when the school has a well furnished duplex for its rectors.

Just confirmed this. The staff in this institution are really unfortunate.

If you ask the management now they will tell you they have cleared the salary arreas and still the memo states clearly they are still paying June 2017 salary.

Why set up a tertiary institution in Nigeria when you can not fund it adequately.

A well funded tertiary institution must not lack modern study infrastructures, highly trained teachers, modern books and research laboratory.
Above, it must take adequate care of the human resources that is the lecturers and the non academic staff.

However, successive government in Nigeria play to the gallery living by pretense to establish tertiary institution that mere end up like a glorified college.

The Abia state polytechnic is one of such. There are many of such elephant project in Nigeria. It littered the Nigeria landscape. It is not farfetched that these glorified colleges called university or polytechnic/college of education were set up for political reasons.

During the Lucky Igbenedion 8 years administration he establish the Edo state Polytechnic at Usen in Ovia South West Local Government Area in Edo state.

For the records, Lucky Igenedion mother hail from Usen in Edo state.

Today, successive government that came after the Lucky Igbenedion administration can not fund the Edo state polytechnic as the state treasury was left empty by Ex-governor Igbenedion.

I can recall an old post here on nairaland where goat and other domesticated livestock was seen patrolling the premises of Edo state polytechnic Usen as if they are part of the student population.

That is the legacy of Ex-governor Lucky Igbenedion.

The same way Ex-governor Lucky Igbenedion mismanaged Edo state fund in establishing poorly funded tertiary school is the same way Ex-governor Uzor Kalu Orji went out of his way to run down the Abia state polytechnic which now can not adequately meet the regular monthly stipend sorry? of its lecturers.

regardless of the online animosity between the south west and the south east, I respect the south west for one thing, inclusiveness and accommodation when it deals with politics at a local level.

It only in Yoruba land, ( to the best of my knowledge) that a man born in ondo (or even from other tribes) can contest and win an elective post in ogun without facing the extremes of tribalism.

But here in the east , if your not from the state regardless of your willingness and touch of Midas to clear the issues at hand, you will never be allowed or given the opportunity to contest elective positions even if your were born and breed in any of the states all your life( Ebonyi may be an exception).

I have stayed in Aba, was born there, schooled there but am from Edo. And I can tell you that the only remedy it to allow someone not from the state or the current political circle come in to do the needful but will the Ngwa, Abriba, ibeku etc people agree.

Aba will continue to have Eye service governors who do nothing in the first 3 yrs of their tenures sighting battles with the Godfathers and finally as elections approach they give you half baked eye service projects and cry to you that they were under bondage.

He came in as a management professional February 2017, met 7 months arreas. A good management professor would have made use of the Rector's Lodge to cut down cost but he decided to lodge in a 25000 naira daily suite since his arrival in February 2017. Multiply that amount by the number of days since that time and tell me.
