Following the heat waves currently experienced in parts of the country, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations, has warned residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take measures to avert outbreak of meningitis.

The agency’s Head of Abuja Operations, Samuel Bitrus, gave the warning during stakeholders Round Table conference for awareness and sensitisation campaign on cerebrospinal meningitis.

He disclosed that FCT is one of the states at risk of an outbreak, adding that about 12 cases were recorded in Abuja in 2017, hence the need to increase awareness to curtail the outbreak in 2018.

Bitrus said Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) has been exacerbated by climate change, hence, the need to promote climate change adaptation and disaster mitigation through sensitisation and public awareness to reduce risk in communities within the FCT.
The Senior Public health specialist Emergency Management Centre For Disease Control, Dr Muhammad Saleh, noted that North Eastern, Western and Central states are at high risk of the epidemic, adding that individuals living in those states should take preventive measures, such that when the disease is noticed, people should seek medical attention at the nearest health facilities.
He said the commonest symptoms include, fever, neck pain and general body loss, while for toddlers, they include inability to suck breast milk, among others, though the commonest symptoms is neck stiffness.
The CDC officer stressed the need for proper hygiene of the body, including mental hygiene, washing of hand before and after eating, environmental sanitation.

The heat in Abuja is something else, they need to educate PHED about the new outbreak, maybe that will help improve power supply in Abuja

Sadly but nonetheless I am happy this is happening! I remember my brief stay in Abuja and I regretted my life! the heat was just too much,it made me to roll from bed to the floor and back to the bed through out the night looking for cold spots. And the rumour of this sickness in town did not help matters,as u will have to open all windows with dusts coming through them. at times I had to sleep on a mat outside. Only power saves me but sadly it does not last,and one can't run gen. all the time. This make me to appreciate the weather in the south south and also wonder why any sane person from the south will leave such an eco-friendly place to go develop Abuja n co that are barren lands.
