Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, has refused to approve the payment of $16.9 million fees to two lawyers for the recovery of Abacha loot worth $321 million. Adeosun also wrote a strongly-worded letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, raising objections to the payment.

TheCable had reported that Enrico Monfrini, a Swiss lawyer hired by the Federal Government since 1999 to work on recovering Abacha loot, had finished the Luxembourg leg of the job since 2014 when Mohammed Bello Adoke was Attorney-General of the Federation. Monfrini had also been paid his fees by the Federal Government. The recovered money was then domiciled with the attorney-general of Switzerland, pending the signing of an MoU with Nigeria to avoid the issues of accountability around previous recoveries.
All that was left after the signing of the MoU was a government-to-government communication for the money to be repatriated to Nigeria. However, Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, had engaged the services of another set of lawyers in 2016 for a fee of about N6 billion.

The Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation, CNJF, a partner organisation to TheCable, then sent a Freedom of Information, FOI, request to Malami for a copy of the agreements reached with Monfrini for the recovery. TheCable understands that the terms in the agreement were clearly spelt out, such that no other lawyer would be needed for the return of the money to Nigeria. Malami refused to accede to the FOI request, but the Cable Foundation is currently in court to seek an order of mandamus to compel the attorney-general to make the documents public.

Imagine contracting lawyers to the tune of $16 million for case that has already been settled. Is Buhari deaf? Is he unaware of these atrocities?

Those Lawyers might have signed an agreement with Previous Presidents to get a 5% cut on any recovered loot. If there is such an agreement i doubt if Buhari can stop this percentage cut

Did you read the article? those lawyers were only brought in 2016 by Malami. The case had been settled since Mohammed Adoke was AGF by a Swiss lawyer contracted by govt in 1999.

Firstly, I am not igbo. This is not the first time AGF Malami is involved in under table dealings. How does it speak to the integrity of this administration having an attorney general that is corrupt?

Good job Adeosun. Not a world bank minister who says it is dangerous to fight corruption and looked the other way while the nation's treasury was being looted. Yet her fellow pigs say she is the best after sliced bread.

Kemi Adeosun is the reason polytechnic graduates are discriminated against till this day in Nigeria.

How will a finance minister be that dull.
Does she know how that payment would have improved the nation's foreign reserve?

Mumu minister.
Typical polytechnic product.

Firstpage:
Good job Adeosun. Not a world bank minister who says it is dangerous to fight corruption and looked the other way while the nation's treasury was being looted. Yet her fellow pigs say she is the best after sliced bread.

Yet that same World Bank minister as Coordinating Minister for Economy started the implementation of the IPPIS that has removed over 100,000 ghost workers and saved over N200 billion as at 2014. The same World Bank Minister who coordinated with the current AfDB President to stop the fertilizer scam.

Now you want to applaud a clerk with no pedigree for not approving a payment to just 2 corrupt lawyers. WTF is her job? Where was she when Malami was bringing in the lawyers? Where was she when the FG through the AG signed an agreement with the lawyers? Another mere commissioner that the cabal will arm twist effortlessly. Or you think we don't know this is her sending a message to the cabal trying to reinstate Gwarzo that she suspended.

Hear this and hear it well. No matter what Adeosun does and no matter how far she goes she wouldn't ever have the reach of Ezekwesili not to talk of Iweala. We are talking about birds, you want to bring a fly to the discussion.
