The agreement was between UNICEF and FIFA. The campaign was meant to improve and protect children’s lives around the world and show that football is making a difference for children. The most visible way the campaign was promoted was by having children “lead the players on to the field wearing FIFA/UNICEF "Say Yes" T-shirts” before every World Cup match in 2002.

i am a football lover and i have always asked for the reason footballers walk alongside kids to the line up during a football match.

i have also gotten answers ranging from the procedure being a FIFA culture to it being a fair play approach.

i still think there is more to it than the above. please football lovers lets give reason to this very popular but yet unexplained modus aparandi that governs the very sport that has united millions of people world over.

lalasticla.la i am sure you are with me on this.

They are Player escorts...

Children have appeared with football players at least since the 1990s either as one mascot for each team or one for every player.[2][3] The UEFA Euro 2000 was one of the first major events where player escorts appeared with every footballer.[2] In club games children are usually members of youth teams or contest winners.[4] Since 2002 World Cup or European Championship escorts are selected in a competition hosted by McDonald's, sponsor of the event.[5][6]

There are various reasons why players walk in with children. These include promoting children rights campaigns, bringing the element of innocence to the game, fulfilling children dreams or making profit of it.[2]

On some occasions there can be special escorts. For example, Ajax Amsterdam players walked out with their mothers on Mother's Day[7] and São Paulo FC players walked out with dogs to raise awareness to stray dogs problem.[8] Some famous players like Wayne Rooney used to be player escort in their childhood.

At the turn of the millennium FIFA announced that they would be partnering with UNICEF in the name of a “Say Yes for Children” Campaign. The campaign was meant to “improve and protect children’s lives” around the world and show “football making a difference for children.” This came slightly after the the first signs of mascots in the premier league in 1999 and at the 2000 European Championships, where for the first time 11 mascots were used on both sides.

I'm also worried about the game. Yes, I love the game but I've been over thinking. What's the joy in seeing 37 other teams suffer and cry just for one to lift the trophy at the end of the season? Take a look at the world cup. 36 teams play, 35 cry and heart breaks and 1 wins. Why? What's the point of all these challenge? Do we gain or lose more from the beautiful game?

It's called competition "the activity or condition of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others".

But i think what's confusing you here is your emphasis on 'crying'. It's not necessary you cry when you are eliminated but footballers do this to show emotion. They have fans depending on them to win, not showing emotion when they lose means they are heartless and doesn't care.

Now, think about politics on how only one man can become president, governor, senator despite several contesting for those seats.

Think of education, some people come first in a class of 30, do you think the other 29 below is position are happy to be behind? This also shows that the student who made 1st in the class is brilliant than the other 30, which is exactly what happens in football. In most Football leagues there are teams that compete for the title, because they have very good players and financial capability to top the other clubs.

In conclusion is all about competition and winning, the crying is to show emotion.[

I know these things. My question is why organise a thing that leaves a sour taste in everyone's mouth? Why make 50 sad and 1 happy? I know it's fun and a game of beauty but I'm looking at it from the human angle.

Just yesterday, Juve players clashed with the referee and there was sadness in Turin and Madrid. 2 days ago, there was sadness in Man City as Pep was red carded. There are four teams now and three will surely gnash and become heartbroken.

So, why? What's the point of that education that encourages hate, envy, blood, sweat and tears among students? Why should we create an educational system that makes 29 sad and 1 happy? Couldn't there have been a better way of doing these things without hurting anyone?

I enjoy football but I don't know for how long. See the fan mocking, the suicides from heartaches as a result of defeat, the hatred flowing in unbroken continuity...The paradox of these activities is beginning to hunt my conscience. Should a game that makes more people heartbroken be upheld?

I DISAGREE. Before 2002 it was 2 kids that sometimes escorted both teams playing to the pitch until 2002 world cup when each player is entitle to a kid. is it fair play you were talking about?
