Missing Nigerian separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu has resurfaced in Israel more than a year after soldiers stormed his home.

"I'm in Israel," Mr Kanu said on Sunday in a broadcast on his outlawed pirate radio station - Radio Biafra.

A video of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (Ipob) leader praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem has also been shared online.

Mr Kanu holds both Nigerian and British nationality and says he is Jewish.

His wife, Uchechi Kanu, told the BBC in February that she believed the government knew where her husband was being held after his home was raided by soldiers.

Mr Kanu has been campaigning for an independent state called Biafra in south-eastern Nigeria.

In 2015, Mr Kanu was charged with "criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation" - charges that could amount to treason.

He was released on bail last year after spending more than 19 months without trial on treason charges.

He then renewed his campaign for independence, before his house in the south-eastern Abia state was raided by the military.

Who is Nnamdi Kanu?
He was a relatively obscure figure until 2009 when he started Radio Biafra, a station that called for an independent state for the Igbo people and is broadcast to Nigeria from London.

Though he grew up in Nigeria's south-east and went to the University of Nsukka, Mr Kanu moved to the UK before graduating.

Soon after setting up Ipob in 2014, he spoke to gatherings of the large Igbo diaspora, calling for Biafran independence. In some of his comments, he urged Biafrans to take up arms against the Nigerian state.

"We need guns and we need bullets," he said in one such address. This comment is what brought him to the attention of Nigeria's security services.

What is Biafra?
The plan for a Biafra state is not new.

In 1967 Igbo leaders declared a Biafran state, but after a brutal civil war, which led to the deaths of up to a million people, the secessionist rebellion was defeated.

Mr Kanu is the latest in a line of ethnic Igbo activists taking up the cause of pushing for an independent state, saying the Igbos have been marginalised by successive Nigerian governments.

Mr Kanu said in Sunday's broadcast that he was still pushing for a referendum to create a breakaway state in the south-east.

He urged his followers to boycott next year's elections in Nigeria unless the government agrees to the push for a referendum.

"Ipob will liberate Biafra and we will not take part in any elections until we get a referendum, it is not negotiable, we will do it by any means," he said.

"I will be back soon in the land of Biafra and I will bring hell with me," he said.

"I owe my survival to the state of Israel," he added, saying that he had been aided by Mossad, country's spy agency, without elaborating how he was assisted.

The BBC has contacted Mossad for its comments.

It is, however, unclear how Mr Kanu was able to get to Israel, as he had to surrender his Nigerian and British passports after his arrest.

The Ipob leader says he is an Igbo Jew, part of a group who believe they are descendants of the lost tribe of Israel who settled in West Africa. According to Jewish tradition, the tribes were scattered after the conquest of the Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrians in the 8th Century BC.

However, it is unclear how and when he converted to Judaism and if it has been accepted by mainstream Jewish authorities.

Nnamdi Kanu has been dressing and acting as though his conversion to Judaism was complete since his release from prison last year.

The video of him praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem whilst draped in a prayer shawl was just the latest example of his public expression of his new-found faith.

Most Igbo people are however Christian and Judaism is only practiced by a minority. The number of those who claim to be Jewish is unclear.

The Jewish connection can be traced from a legend that a descendant of the biblical Jacob, Abraham's grandson, moved to West Africa.

It says Eri, one of the sons of Gad, Jacob's seventh son, migrated from Egypt and travelled by water and arrived at a confluence of the Ezu and Omambala rivers which is located in present day Aguleri in Anambra state, one of the Igbo states in Nigeria.

Eri's eldest son Agulu was the one who appended the name of his father to his own name after taking over from his father and that's how the name of the present day Agulueri was derived.

Some researchers also point to cultural similarities between Igbo and Jewish people: they circumcise their male children, name them after eight days and also have a seven-day mourning period.

If these are the only similarities they have discovered between Igbo and Jewish, on shared Hebrew culture, then, they have done no research.

Proper research will show that Igbo are ancient hebrew in every ramification.

The Israeli government yesterday said it has no evidence about the appearance of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in the country.

According to the government, the pictures and videos showing Nnamdi Kanu praying in Israel could be old.

Speaking during an interaction with some African Journalists in Jerusalem, the spokesman of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Nashon said there was no evidence that the leader of IPOB was in their country of recent.

“There are no details about his recent visit to this country yet,” Emmanuel said adding that the pictures and videos could be old ones.

Speaking on their relationship with Africa, Emmanuel said Israel has been misconstrued adding that they are getting back to their old friends.

“Our relationship with Africa is extremely important,” Emmanuel said insisting that the continent stand to benefit more from Israel.

“Israel is a peaceful nation that believes in the process of the world at this changing times,” Emmanuel disclosed, adding that they have different religion such as: Judaism, Christianity and Islam that live peacefully with one another.

“Jerusalem is one of the great cities in the world. We have Judaism, Christianity and Islam as religions. We are considering a lot of networks with Africa and African Journalists will get direct contact with Israel journalist so that you don’t need to take news from a agencies.”

“Our embassies will also provide you with information any time you want it. Israel is a place with a lot of diversity and you see Jews from Africa and other parts of the world. We have Christians we have Muslims also. We are united in Israel,” he added.

The videos from Jerusalem could simply be a video taken from his House by the Nigeria Army.

The Nigeria Army are still holding him and his family and as such wat we hear purported to be from him are mere script handed to him by Buhari.

Buhari is simply trying to stop the SE from voting so he can win a second term unopposed.

Recall that the maritime security contract that was signed off by the Federal Executive Council in December 2017, would have seen the contractor, HSLI, earn $195 million in exchange for three helicopters, three aircraft, three big battle-ready ships, 12 vessels and 20 amphibious cars to secure Nigerian waters. President Buhari in May 2018 cancelled the contract via a memo dispatched by his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, directing attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, to terminate the contract and for the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) to investigate how the contractor obtained security clearance without an end-user certificate. The leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has said that the intelligence prowess of the MOSSAD will be replicated within Biafran intelligence, purposely to avenge the death of 28 IPOB members, that of his cousin Adaku; and also that of Jack, his dog, all of who were allegedly killed during the invasion of his father’s compound last year.

MOSSAD, short for HaMossad leModiʿin uleTafkidim Meyuḥadim, is the national intelligence agency of Israel.

Kanu also said that Biafra must be restored. He said that his people wanted a referendum for the Biafran State.



Kanu, who said he was speaking from the holy land of Israel, spoke in English, but regularly spiced his speech with Igbo, promising listeners that he would return.

Kanu said in a live speech on Radio Biafra as broadcast via the Facebook, “I have missed you for 13 months. I pray for all of you seven times every day,” calling for a “moment of silence for the 28 persons who sacrificed their lives that we might live.”

Continuing, he noted that “Fulani killers” sent killers to his house “to kill my entire family;” explaining that he “sustained a severe injury, while 28 men fell.”

He narrated how he and his family members escaped what he described as “assault,” promising that the “efficiency of the MOSSAD” would be replicated in the IPOB intelligence to avenge the blood of IPOB members that fell.

Discussing his invincibility, Kanu said, “No mortal can kill me; I will come back to Biafra land.”

He took sides with the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, who is currently being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“Biafrans stand with Governor Fayose at this dark hour of persecution,” he promised.



He explained that his absence was not voluntary but was forced upon him; saying that the notion that he jumped bail was “a fallacy, a lie, and a deceit.”

“I’m not afraid of them and can never be. They’re the ones afraid of me and IPOB. I am a Biafran, and I hold British citizenship,” Kanu boasted.

He railed at the judge who had asked his sureties to produce him, saying the judge should have asked the Army why they invaded his family house and sacked the village.

He said, “Nigerian court is a Kangaroo court. I did not jump bail. I left because the court failed to protect me.”

Declaring that he would not honour any court appearance again, Kanu said, “I cannot be tried by a court I do not recognise.

“The zoo called Nigeria cannot jail me. I will fight till the last day,” he vowed.

He took a swipe at the courts, saying, “Till now, Binta Nyanko’s court is yet to hold a hearing about the circumstances that led the Nigerian Army to come to my house to kill 28 people.

“Only upon a clear pronouncement of the intentions of that very court, which I suggest to them should be free, will this very case move forward.

“Going forward, there must be guarantee from the international community so that this case can proceed and I will prove once and for all that there is something fundamentally wrong with the brains of those that rule Nigeria.”

Describing his eventual escape, Kanu said, “Two jets were hovering over and they stormed into my house and I sustained severe injuries and in the process of trying to defend me, 28 men fell. They are forever our hero.”

“The sole purpose of that evil dance was to kill me and members of my family. They didn’t want me to go to Abuja because they didn’t have any case against me.

“They were afraid they would be disgraced before the world. They decided to eliminate me instead.

“They know if I go to court, that very country will not be the same again.”

Continuing, he said, “All we desire is freedom; we have no shred of hatred; we are frustrated. Biafra must come.”

Exonerating the IPOB of any “form of lawlessness,” he said his people were innocent.

“The sole purpose of the Python Dance was to kill me. There was no justification for the invasion,” he enthused.

He took a swipe at the “Igbo supporters” of the “Fulani Buhari,” with particular vitriol for Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, who he said directed the assault on his father’s compound.

He added, “I am Nnamdi Kanu, no mortal flesh can kill me. They have not given birth to that very person. Since they didn’t want me to come to court, I shall come back to Biafra land. There is nobody who can accuse IPOB of engaging in any form of lawlessness. I am in Israel.

“This same court that granted me bail stood by and watched as the army disobeyed court order. The army in contempt of court court came to kill me. I was in my home preparing to go to Abuja for my case when they came to kill me. They even killed Jack, our dog. They killed my cousin, Adaku and 28 others. The notion that I jumped bail is a fallacy, a lie and a deceit. It is untenable in law.”

He said whenever IPOB chooses to revenge, the world would know that it is due to extreme provocation.

He called on the Middle Belt to join IPOB so that the region could “also be free.”

In the over 50-minute live Facebook feed, Nnamdi Kanu added: “IPOB military intelligent evacuated me from my compound when the Army of the Zoo attacked me.

“I thank Donald Trump and the government of Israel who stood by IPOB in our time of need. I thank Prof. Ben Nwabueze who stood by me.

“I want to send my solidarity to Ayo Fayose and assure him that Biafra will stand by him in this hour of need. We will have a special place for him in Biafra.

“I thank all my sureties that stood by me. My unavailability was forced on me.

“I shall not be honouring the court. The notion that I jumped bail is a fallacy in law. I did not jump bail. On the 14th of September, 2017, the terrorists of the Zoo came to kill me. They know if I go to court Nigeria will burn and I was forced to leave. I did not jump bail.

“The Zoo called Nigeria cannot jail me. I will fight till the last day.

“I am not a Nigerian. I already renounced Nigeria in 2015. I am a Biafran with British nationality. I cannot be tried by a court I do not recognise. I do not recognise Nigeria. I can only come to the court with UN supervision.

“IPOB will liberate Biafra and we will not take part in any election, until we get a referendum and this is not negotiable. We will achieve this by every necessary means. We thank Israel for all the contributions they made to IPOB. I owe my survival to the State of Israel.”

Kanu also decreed the South East or South South Nigeria out of existence. “It shall be known as Biafra. Without referendum, nothing will happen in Nigeria. IPOB will not participate in any election and that position will never change.

“IPOB is the largest mass movement in the whole world. We will not stop until Biafra is fully restored.

Declaring war on Nigeria, Kanu said, “Chukwu Okike Obiama has assured me that Biafra shall come. All collaborators will feel the full weight of the anger of the Biafran people.

“I am coming back to Biafra land soon and I will bring hell with me the way it has never been seen before.”

If America could not save the 3 US soldiers surrounded by Boko Haram in Niger Republic, how did IPOB save injured Nnamdi Kanu without firing one shot.

I believe he was injured in the same way Zazaky was injured and taken captive by the Army where he received treatment.

It is very hard not to be injured under such attacks.

I hope you all know that the President is backed by the constitution to appoint an overseer of his choice,in any region or state where election failed to hold for one reason or the other.

Boycotting 2019 will spell more doom for us than you all can imagine. It may seem like fantasy now that the world would take us serious. But if they failed to take us serious when we sacrificed 3 million of our people in a war, they may take us serious when we sacrificed 6 million in another war, not a mere election boycott.
