Recently Mr President caused an uproar after he apparently claimed that Nigerian youths were lazy and uninterested in self-improvement. Predictably, the national reaction was swift and condemnatory of the utterances. Some of us do not believe that Nigerian youths are lazy. I for one believe they simply lack information on how to go about improving their circumstances. My suggestion is that they go into manufacturing. Backyard manufacturing of the type practised by millions of Chinese, and increasingly, Indian, households.

The idea that one needs a large factory and large amounts of capital to become a manufacturer is false. A lot of the things we import from China, we imagine they're made in huge factories. But it's not true. Many are made in people's backyards.

You can go online and learn how to manufacture shoes in your backyard. Top shoes that you can sell for serious money. Not just in your neighbourhood or country, but worldwide. Sell in your online store.

Other items you can manufacture in your backyard, and for which you can easily learn the method online, are:

Soap. Create your own flashy brand, with different soap flavours and fragrances. Add local/traditional herbs to some of the soaps and advertise their 'green, healthy, healing benefits'. Great selling point.

Ladies' Handbags

Your output is only limited by your imagination. The great thing about this niche is that you do not have to follow anyone's path or use conventional manufacturing styles with glossy leather bags etc. In fact the more UNUSUAL the better, these days. Women worldwide are always on the lookout for something different. Something unusual. Something special. You can use all sorts of local materials to build stunning handbags. Just use your imagination.

Clocks

If you knew how easy it was to manufacture a clock, you would have bitten yourself for missing out on this opportunity. Again, it is about more than just the clock. It is about the DESIGN of it. Again, once you have the mechanical clock installed, you can create all sorts of designs to place it in.

This clock above was made with just a bit of cardboard and paint.

You can be very creative here. You don't build the actual mechanical clock. You acquire that in numbers, cheaply, then build the designs.

If you do it right, you can make a great living just doing this. Create a brochure of your designs and distribute around offices. Build your online store and sell worldwide.

Wine Racks

How hard can it be to build something like this and market it to guys that have money? It's a cakewalk. Build a few, then create a brochure of your designs, and go round joints and bars frequented by 'big boys'. Distribute your brochures. Your phone won't stop ringing! The Nigerian middle class is expanding rapidly. They NEED these kinds of stuff. For design inspiration, go on Google Images.

Office Furniture

Build unusual office furniture and make a killing!

There are cheap machines you can buy to build that kind of curvy wood design. Why not go with that?

Other things come to mind that you can manufacture in your backyard - clothes, toothpicks, perfume, belts, fertilizer, bread, sweets, etc.

As always, branding, packaging, and marketing are keys to success.

Visualize the final product, Keep your focus, and get going. You cannot fail.

Good luck!
