Lobi Stars made a statement of intent with a 1-0 defeat of Kano Pillars at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi in Sunday’s NPFL top-of-the-pile match.

Ayo Saka’s 80th minute strike was all Lobi needed to consolidate at the top of the log.

It was the matchday’s top fixture with a star cast as both teams fielded potent strike partnerships.

Lobi paraded an attacking combo of Anthony Okpotu and Samad Kadiri while Pillars had Nyima Nwagua and Junior Lokosa in attack.

On paper, it promised an end-to-end stuff and that was what exchanges looked like most of the time.

In the 2nd minute, Ebube Duru curled a free-kick inches wide.

Then in the 15th minute, Pillars right back Victor Dennis was on hand to thwart a Lobi foray. His last ditch clearance went out for a corner.

Five minutes later, Okpotu flicked on to Kadiri but just as the club’s leading scorer was about pulling the trigger, the assistant referee flagged offside.
