Advantages of Lithium
Weight
Lithium weighs one third that of a comparably sized lead acid battery. If you’ve every picked up a lead acid battery you know they’re VERY heavy. A 300 Ah usable capacity lead acid battery bank weighs over 400 pounds!! Placing this much weight in your RV near the front – where it should be – can exceed the hitch weight limit of your towing vehicle. Our 320 Ah usable capacity lithium battery bank however weighs just 144 pounds

Physical Size
Lithium batteries take up less physical space than lead acid batteries. Comparing two battery banks – one lithium and the other lead acid – of equivalent usable amp-hours, the lithium battery bank will be smaller in size. The difference is not as drastic as the weight comparison, but it is enough to take notice. This can be crucial if you’re trying to fit a battery bank in a small compartment!

Charge Discharge Speed
Lithium batteries can handle a lot more “abuse” than lead acid. Our 200 Ah lithium batteries can each be continuously charged and discharged at a rate of 100 amps without harming them. Lead acid batteries simply cannot handle these charge and discharge currents. If even a large lead acid battery were charged or discharged continuously at 100 amps not only would its life cycle be reduced dramatically, but it would also vent lots of hydrogen gas and risk catching fire. Consequently, a smaller lithium battery bank can supply electricity to very high draw appliances.

Lead acid requires a three stage charging profile where each stage progressively lowers the charge current. Lead acid can be bulk charged up to 80%, then must be absorption charged from 80% to about 95%, then must be float charged to 100%. Lithium however can be “bulk” charged all the way up to 100% state of charge. Therefore lithium allows MUCH faster charging due to its ability to accept higher charge currents and single stage charging.

Even Discharge Voltage
As Lead acid batteries discharge, they consistently and considerably lose voltage. Lithium batteries however maintain their voltage throughout nearly the entire discharge curve. This equates to – with lithium – greater efficiency and lifespan of your electronics.

Higher Charge Efficiency
Lead acid batteries only have a charge efficiency of 85%. This means that for every amp sent to the batteries, only .85 amps are stored for use. Lithium batteries however have a charge efficiency of 99% so nearly every amp sent to them is stored and usable. Therefore, a lead acid battery bank will require a 15% larger – and more expensive – solar array to charge it as fast as a comparably sized lithium battery bank.

Depth of Discharge and Usable Amp Hours
Lead acid batteries can only be discharged down to 50% state of charge before being harmed. Lithium batteries however can be discharged all the way down to 80% state of charge or deeper! Consequently, a lithium battery has more usable amp hours than a lead acid battery of equivalent amp-hour capacity. For example: a 100 Ah lead acid battery can only have 50 Ah drawn from it before harming it, whereas a 100 Ah lithium battery can have 80 Ah or more drawn from it.

Lifespan
The lifespan of lithium batteries is incredible! Lithium batteries are typically rated to last 5,000 cycles. Most lead acid batteries are only rated for 400 cycles or less. This means lithium batteries will last ten times longer than their lead acid counterparts! On top of this, higher levels of discharge greatly affects the number of cycles you can squeeze out of lead acid batteries. Lithium cycle life however is less affected by deeply discharging them.



Disadvantages of Lithium
The only aspect where lead acid beats lithium is in up-front cost. Unfortunately, lithium batteries cost about three times as much as lead acid per usable amp-hour.


Bottom Line In Lithium vs. Lead Acid
We LOVE our lithium batteries. The main reason we went the lithium route is because the weight and size of a large lead acid battery bank was infeasible for our small RV. We begrudgingly made the large up-front investment in lithium after realizing this but now know it was one of the best decisions we could have made. Lithium performs better than lead acid in every single category. It is the rare occurrence where there really is no downside. Even when looking at cost, the long-term cost of ownership of lithium is far less than that of lead acid.

We highly recommend building your RV solar battery bank out of lithium batteries from a respectable brand.
