A diplomatic crisis between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia is looming as Nigerian Pilgrims might be blocked from attending the 2018 Hajj spiritual exercise.

PoliticsNGR learned that Saudi Arabian authorities have threatened to block Nigerian pilgrims over the Lassa Fever Outbreak in the country.

Nigeria is one of the largest attendees of the Hajj as over 95,000 pilgrims visit the holy land of Mecca every year for the spiritual exercise.



The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Monday revealed that the Outbreak of Lassa fever in the country has raised serious concerns in the Arab country.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 1081 suspected cases and 90 deaths have been reported from 18 states (Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Federal Capital Territory, Gombe, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ondo, Osun, Plateau, Rivers, and Taraba) between January 1 through February 25 this year.

During the period, 317 cases have been classified as confirmed and eight as probable, including 72 deaths.

Confirming the incident, a spokesperson of NAHCON, Ubandawaki Mousa. revealed that the Nigerian authorities are not happy over the development.

He revealed that a meeting will be holding in the office of the Secretary general of the Federation(SGF) on Tuesday between officials from all 36 states, the commision and officials from the federal government.
