Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum (NGF), Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, has said state governors cannot enforce maximum security in their domains because they are not in control of security agencies. http://thenationonlineng.net/abdulaziz-yari-governors-toothless-to-secure-their-states/ lalasticlala |

Sad but true. A group of people who are armed with heavy guns invades your state and you call on the CP of your state and he calls Abuja first before deciding if its a situation that demands urgent attention. Really pathetic. 13 Likes |

I still believe it's these governors choices that allow these kind of unfortunate events to continue happening in their states. Because If you can't be creative in finding solution there are alot of examples in the History. |

Nice one TonyeBarcanista. I'm with you on this. The truth is; Nigerian governors; mostly those in the South are ball-less scarecrows. Imagine Benue state had a governor like Adams Oshiomhole or Taraba had a governor like James Ibori. All these anarchy would have been tackled headlong from the state level. What we see today are powerless governors who depend on the President's order to carry out their assigned job as Chief Security officers of their own states. This will forever be unjustified. 12 Likes 3 Shares |

This is yet another consequence of the incredibly idiotic overcentralized system we run in Nigeria. Even the USA whose federalism we blindly copy pasted have state police and grassroot local county sheriff forces. Imagine a working governor unable to control the police force of his state, effectively he can't even declare a state of emergency on his own. Imagine! How will an "Ade" from Oyo understand the workings of Sokoto state? How will Chibuzor from Abia be effective in Benue? how will bala from Jigawa understand the complexities oF Rivers State gangs Radical decentralization of the police force plus grassroot recruitment is needed, Eben if just for local Community patriotism, but nah we'll rather just remain obtusely stupid!! NONSENSE!!!! 10 Likes 1 Share |

TonyeBarcanista: Please don't just try to defend the wrong policing model we have here. Please. It's grossly efficient and gives the responsibility of security to governors without the authority to back it up. So, one of two things: It's either you STOP referring to the governors as the chief security officers of their states and saddle the security responsibility on the president, OR Let states have their own police and assume full responsibility and authority for the security in their states. And of course the second option is the more efficient one in a federal system. 3 Likes 1 Share |

NwaAmaikpe: Let's not be emotional about this. What's wrong is wrong. What's the standard practice in management? Match responsibility with authority. Not so? 3 Likes |

Decentralized police is the answer to secruity concerns. The police force should be run by local gocernments. You need fiscal automony for it to work. The states can have their police if they choose. They also need decentralize prisions. The federal government should focus on manning borders, curruption and interstate crimes like FBI. 2 Likes |

I told my son, “You will marry the girl I choose.” He said, “NO!” I told him, “She is Bill Gates’ daughter.” He said, “OK.” I called Bill Gates and said, “I want your daughter to marry my son.” Bill Gates said, “NO.” I told Bill Gates, My son is the CEO of World Bank.” Bill Gates said, “OK.” I called the President of World Bank and asked him to make my son the CEO. He said, “NO.” I told him, “My son is Bill Gates’ son-in-law.” He said, “OK.” This is exactly how politics works! |

BankeSmalls: It all boils down to rapport with State Police bosses. Most governors talk too much. They run to press, cry on social media, complain and blame. If you ask them they'd claim "I am doing my best to contain the situation" or "we are going to investigate the matter". In truth, they're only saying all these to "seem" serious without any tangible communication with the Police. They would not take steps to establish any working and respectful relationship with their State Police bosses. Some even imagine the State CP is theirs to Lord over instead of forming a partnership! State CPs do not call Abuja for every action, they are authorized to act and report later, taking responsibility for their actions. Yes, the governor cannot "control" his state's CP but they can "brainstorm" together and achieve peace together. At this level, they share intelligence, resources and success. Because of bossy attitudes and lack of rapport, CPs and governors are known to be at loggerheads and mutual distrust, Benue and Taraba as cases. |
Re: Abdulaziz Yari: Governors Toothless To Secure Their States by BankeSmalls(f): 3:56pm On Apr 28, 2018 |
Haddock: Are you saying the continued bloodbath in the middle belt is because the state governors refused to cooperate with the CP in their states? Secondly, do you think the police can save the lives of Benue and Taraba people if the governors "bow down and worship" their CPs? |
Re: Abdulaziz Yari: Governors Toothless To Secure Their States by Haddock(m): 5:02pm On Apr 28, 2018 |
BankeSmalls: No, you got me wrong, using the word "worship" is out of place. I was referring to a mutual and cordial relationship. Their goals are the same. The governor should yearn for peace for his people, whilst the CP aspire for peace within his jurisdiction. How can they both achieve this single but huge task if communication and professional respect does not flow between them? How can they both achieve this if there is suspicion or paranoia? I was hinting on cooperation between them rather than quarrel. The CPs are semi-independent from Abuja. Each governor has a direct telephone access to his CP for intelligence sharing and security chit chat. Let them use it. |
Re: Abdulaziz Yari: Governors Toothless To Secure Their States by BankeSmalls(f): 5:10pm On Apr 28, 2018 |
Haddock: Its either you are a child or you are a foreigner thinking Nigeria is USA. I asked about Benue and Taraba for you to see how toothless the governors are and you are here talking cooperation when people are dying like flies. The CP themselves are mere puppets in this game of security. They are as powerless as the governors, and as incompetent too. The federal are trying everything to keep the state police on their apron strings, step out one bit and get transferred to an obscure office or retired, no allowance for free thinking. If its easy, Ortom and his Taraba counterpart can as well arm thugs to defend his people, only that same police will shoot them with SARS and say they are the troublemakers. You need to grow up. |

Haddock: Here's a real life example of the failure of the police from Zamfara. Even when governors do everything right they fail. Zamfara governor's story. “The other time we had intelligence that bandits were camped on a mountain, ready to attack a village. After the idiot fails he gets promoted by federal government. “But what did we see, a few months after, he was posted elsewhere and soon after promoted as Assistant Inspector General of Police” Source 3 Likes 1 Share |
