Vehicle Overview

The Lexus RX may not be the luxury brand’s most exciting model, but it certainly is the best-selling Lexus car or crossover. Buyers flock to the RX because it’s a well-made, soft-riding, comfort-filled Lexus with the higher seating position and cargo capacity of a crossover.

The five-passenger 2014 Lexus RX is available in two models: the RX 350, and the hybrid RX 450h. Underneath the hood, the RX 350 houses a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 270 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. Other standard features and amenities include automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, a power liftgate, push-start button, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining rear seat, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. For an ever edgier RX 350, there’s the F Sport package, which adds an eight-speed automatic and a sport-tuned suspension in addition to more aggressive styling cues such as a blacked-out front grille and bigger 19-inch wheels. “It’s a nice box, smooth and responsive,” we said of the eight-speed gearbox. The F Sport package delivers only fractionally better numbers than a non-F Sport, though. The lateral performance damping system does deliver some upside. “Using tuned dampers instead of traditional fixed suspension-mounting pieces at the front shock towers and in the rear subframe, the system helps absorb body flex and vibrations. Our fingertips say the steering feel is conspicuously improved,” we said of the Lexus RX 350 F Sport.

The Lexus RX achieves 18/25 mpg city/highway in front-drive form, while the RX with all-wheel drive achieves 18/26 with the eight-speed automatic and 18/24 with the six-speed automatic. For those interested in maximizing efficiency, the front-drive RX 450h bumps fuel economy up to 32/28 mpg while the RX 450h with all-wheel drive achieves 30/28 mpg. The RX 450h is powered by a 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 and electric motors that together produce 295 hp. Power is driven to the wheels via a continuously variable transmission. Standard equipment included with the RX 450h is along the same lines as the RX 350.


What’s New for 2014

A few changes are in store for the 2014 Lexus RX, including a new Ultra White exterior paint color that replaces Starfire Pearl for F Sport models. Rear passengers now have access to a 115-volt AC power outlet as part of the Luxury Package, and the Advanced Pre-Collision System now has pre-brake system.
