The Yola Command of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has destroyed illicit drugs weighing 14 Tonnes with street value of 500 million Naira.

The public destruction and burning of the 14.360 tonnes of illicit hard drugs by the NDLEA on Monday, was described as alarming given the fact that only two years ago, a similar incident of hard drug burning took place in the state where over eight tonnes of the drug was destroyed.

The drugs have an estimated street value of over 500 million Naira.

The NDLEA said that within the same period, the Command arrested 502 suspects and secured 236 convictions.

The Chairman of the NDLEA, Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah, said that the increase in the supply and consumption of illicit drugs have heightened in the north east due to the activities of terrorists as evidenced by the seizure of drugs by the military in terrorist camp.

The composition of drugs set ablaze include pharmaceutical drugs of prescription such as cough syrup with codeine, tramadol, cannabis sativa and cocaine.
