Nigeria’s National Carrier, Globacom, has said that the ICT development at the international level has made it imperative for the girl-child in Nigeria to be fully integrated into the world of ICT. Globacom which recently partnered with e-Business Life Communications Limited, publishers of e-Business Life magazine, to celebrate the 2018 Edition of the International Girls-in-ICT Day, called for support for the girl-child to take advantage of the vast opportunities in ICT. The International Girls-in ICT Day, an initiative of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), is backed by all ITU members and is meant to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) and is observed in 166 countries around the world. Speaking at the event held at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, Globacom’s representative, a manager at the company’s Call Centre, Mrs Kemi Fadipe, said the company partnered with the organizers to expose participants to the various career opportunities available in the ICT sector and courage them to aspire to such jobs. Mrs Fadipe reiterated to the students who were drawn from eleven secondary schools in Lagos that the world now revolved around ICT and that the future held a lot of promise for them should they go into the ICT sector. She noted that every enterprise, including commerce, banking, manufacturing, construction, medicine and social interaction now depend on ICT to thrive. “This is why Globacom continues to make massive investments in the telecommunications sector to boost telecom service delivery in different parts of the country and power economic and social life. Since inception, we have pioneered innovative solutions in the industry and our reliable data services and affordable tariff plans will help you in your school research,” she told the students, adding that Globacom offers a veritable platform for them to excel in different career areas of telecoms. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, In her opening remarks at the event, publisher of e-Business Life magazine and convener of Girls in ICT Day in Nigeria, Mrs Ufuoma Emuophedaro, said she held the event to “join our voices to the rest of the world to encourage our young girls to delve into ICT based careers or at best intensify its use in what they do”. The students who attended the event were from Lagoon Secondary School, Chrisland School, Wahab Folawiyo Secondary School, Kuramo College, Victoria Island Secondary School, Peaklane College, Baptist Girls Academy, Reagan Memorial Baptist College, Grace High School and Faith Academy.
