The traditional ruler of Ekpetiama Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, King Bubaraye Dakolo has sent a protest letter to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), accusing some employees, especially expatriates of oil multinationals companies operating in the State of human trafficking and alleged use of young girls as intimacy gadgets.
The Director General of the NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli, who confirmed receipt of the letter from the monarch while delivering a key note address delivered in Yenagoa during a summit organised by the Bayelsa First Class Traditional Rulers Wives Association, also appealed for stakeholders’ support in tackling the menace.
According to Dame Okah-Donli, “our daughters are being exploited by the oil workers who see them as intimacy gadgets to be played with, and as Queens and mothers, we should not let that happen. Here in Bayelsa, our young girls are at the risk of trafficking due to the endemic nature of our state.”
“Being in the coastal line and the presence of oil companies in the state has made our dear Bayelsa State a source, transit and destination state when it comes to human trafficking for sexual and labour exploitation.”
The NAPTIP Director General called on the Nigerian Mothers to ensure that the girl child are educated due to evils of human trafficking, increased literacy and political representation, safe sex and smaller families and income potential and poverty reduction,” as queen mothers, there is need for you to use your esteemed position to raise awareness on the importance of educating our girls who will turn grow into young women.”
Earlier in her speech, the Chairperson of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers’ Wives Association (BSTWA) and the Queen of the Town Brass Kingdom, Her Majesty, Dr. Josephine Diette-Spiff, noted that the purpose to every platform, including the wives of traditional rulers, is to benefit all.
According to her, “use the God’s opportunity to better the lot of your community, attracting progress to your people and adding value to their lives with great respect”. https://orientdailynews.com.ng/news/bayelsa-monarch-accuses-oil-workers/lalasticlala seun mynd44 |
