The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is the country’s elite football league with 20 football clubs nationwide involved in the activities of the league. While we have a few private teams, the bulk of the clubs are owned, sponsored and managed by the various state governments.
The League Management Company [LMC] is saddled with the responsibility to manage the league in collaboration with Nigeria Football Federation(NFF).

Since the emergence of the League Management Company headed by Shehu Dikko, the have been lots of reforms that has given the league a new look with sponsors been present more than ever.

Violence in football and crowd trouble are issues impeding the growth of the round lather game in the country as it tends to rub mud on the hard work and a level of success recorded by the LMC.

The Nigeria Professional Football League has what it takes to be one of the most organized and respected league in the continent, but its standing is undermined by recurring incidents that stems from clubs’ inability to accept outcomes when results don’t go their way. This has often led to club officials and fans taking laws into their hands by carrying out dastardly acts that tarnishes the image of the league cum efforts of the LMC.

The League Management Company has greatly been too lenient on erring clubs, limiting their punitive measures to handing out fines and banishing teams to play in different stadium; always in the same geographical location.

Many keen followers of the league have raised voices in a bid to see the league improve and have asked the LMC to hand out harsher punishments but they league’s governing body is yet to slam tougher penalties on defaulting teams.

However, things have changed this year with Sunshine Stars of Akure having three points deducted following an incident that occurred in a 0-0 draw against visiting Kano Pillars. Match officials were attacked after the encounter and the state club which has a reputation for crowd disturbances had to play a most of their games at Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state last season due to crowd trouble.

Newly promoted side Heartland FC were also handed heavy sanctions by the LMC. The Owerri-based club assaulted the match referee after they played out a 1-1 draw with last season’s NPFL champions Plateau United. The referee was injured in the process and this prompted the LMC to wield the big stick and slammed a fine of N7.5 million and ensured the Nazi Millionaires play afterwards behind closed doors.

The latest of such incidences was the match between Yobe Desert Stars and Kwara Stars in a match played at Damaturu. The game ended 1-1 which was a breather for the Illorin-based outfit and needed a positive result to boost their chance of remaining in the NPFL.

The club officials and fans of Yobe Stars were unhappy with the outcome of the result, hence invaded the pitch in the process and had the match officials and the away team (Kwara United) were ambushed and beaten.

The home teams have been handed the same punishment as Heartland FC but were asked to pay a fine of N4.25 million.
While encomium should be showered on the LMC for a great improvement in the league and with the sanctions meted out on erring teams and a few other areas, one major area of concern is ‘player welfare’. The league framework states that clubs must pay players according to contractual agreements and failure to do this could mean heavy sanctions are imposed.

The LMC seem to turn a blind eye on this sensitive and vital aspect of league management, as clubs are seen owing players backlog of salaries and allowances. This negative trend does not portray the league in a good light hence explains why players are ready to any league, even those lower in the standard of play to the NPFL due to poor welfare emoluments back here in the league.

The League Management Company [LMC] must work assiduously and enforce in all aspects of the game and the league rules as enshrined in the articles that govern the league in the country as this will ensure growth in the country’s football and attract more private investors.

i have always said it during conversation with football stakeholders both formally and informal fora.we have refused to develope in this country due to our myopic way of handling issues. what we are running here in nigeria is an amateur league all in the name of professional league.
i think the current management of lmc have been distracted lately with football politics in the glass house.

We need to promote the community or fan ownership model that encourages good fan relations with one another. i am currently working with a group of football enthuaist in establishing the first online football owned club in nigeria to be based in awka.

our league is currently not ripe for private investment because of lack of return on investment but can only grow if the community or fans or supporter group can be used to challenge the current model of government and unserious private investor.

join us in establishing the first online owned community club.
