The Polish Ambassador to Nigeria has been summoned by the Nigerian government for consultation on the circumstances that led to the brutal murder of a Nigerian in Poland by Polish police.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja Monday expressed shock at the ‘wanton killing of a Nigerian citizen without established culpability’ which the Ministry said ‘demonstrates a highhandedness
on the part of the Polish police’.

The statement, which was signed by Mr Ozo Nwobu, Head of the Public Communications Department of the Ministry, called on the Polish authorities to begin an ‘immediate and full enquiry into the shooting to death of the Nigerian citizen and the reported harassment of many other Nigerians
resident in Poland.

The text of the full statement reads: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has learnt with deep shock, the tragic shooting to death of a Nigerian in Warsaw, Poland, on Sunday 23rd May, 2010.

“The news of the incident which was conveyed in a report by our mission in Warsaw revealed that the Nigerian was shot to death by the Polish police in an open market place in Warsaw called the Russian Market. The report also indicates that Polish authorities, for undisclosed reasons, also arrested some Nigerians in Warsaw in the aftermath of the shooting.
