Picking an outfit sometimes could be a difficult puzzle and there’s one common link to that – choosing the right color. You seem to have trouble choosing colors that are right for you, you’re not alone. In our world today, color plays an integral role in styling and one has to be careful when choosing outfits, whether you are a model or not, identifying the colors that look great on you is essential if you want to make a fashion statement. Wearing the wrong color could make a very pretty dress look very odd on you. This issue with colors also applies to wearing makeup, you could try on a shade of lipstick and it will look great on you, only for you to test out another similar to the same shade and it gives you an awkward look.

When it comes to styling you should never go wrong with colors, because this might affect the overall appearance of the outfit.

The reason some colors don’t match with you has to do with the surface and undertones of your skin color. If you don’t know the difference between these two skin tones, well you are about to find out. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

Surface tone is the surface color people would describe you as having (often know as skin complexion). Skin surface tone has various shades – dark, light, medium, ivory, tan, etc.

Your skin undertone as the name implies is the underlying color of your skin. You could have the same color as someone but a different undertone. Skin undertone can either be cool, warm, or neutral.

Cool (pink, red or bluish undertones)

Warm (yellow, peachy or golden undertones)

Neutral is a mix of cool and warm undertones (can take a variety of colors)

Tips to knowing the right colors for your skin tone
1. Identify your undertone

Knowing your undertone will enable you to make the right choices when it comes to choosing colors that will look good on you.

How to Determine Your Undertone

Check the color of your veins
Roll up your sleeves and if your skin is light enough you should be able to see the color of the veins on your wrist. If they appear blue it means you have a cool undertone. If they look greenish then you have a warm undertone.

Look at your jewelry
You should consider the jewelry that you look better in, gold or silver? Don’t consider your preference but what actually suits you best. Cool tone individuals tend to look better in silver jewelry, and gold jewelry flatter warm tones.

Check your reaction to the sun
How does your skin react when you go out on the sun? When you are exposed to sunlight, if you burn easily you are likely cool undertoned, those with warm undertone just get darker in the sun.

Eye color
The colors of your natural eyes can help you figure out your undertone. It is known that people with blue, gray or green eyes have cool undertones. Conversely those with brown, amber, or hazel eyes are warm toned.

People with cool undertone pair beautifully with white, bright blue, royal blue, emerald, lavender, ruby, bright rose, gray, navy, sapphire, deep purple and also pink.

Warm toned individuals flatter in honey, coral, cream, orange, red, golden yellow, amber, warm green, warm blue, olive, reddish purple, deep turquoise.

If you are blessed with a neutral skin tone although you’ll slay in almost any colour, you should opt for softer shades such as: off white, coffee color, mid shade gray, black, jade green, corn silk yellow, lavender and lagoon blue.

2. Know the color wheel

Knowing your undertone tone is not just enough when it comes to choosing colors, you are not expected to wear one solitary color at a time. Color blocking/mixing has become a major fashion trend in recent years; you should learn which colors complement each other. Split the color wheel in half, and on one side you’ll have warm colors and the other cool colors. Pick a color and trace it to the direct opposite and you’ll have two colors that complement each other. The colors to the left and right of that same color will also fit beautifully into your outfit.

There you have it folks, all you need to look stunning in your daily combination of colors. Know your undertone and have an understanding of the color wheel and you can never go wrong when choosing colors.
