Ogun Peace Corps organises skill training programme for commanders

In a bid to equip its men with entrepreneurial skills, the Ogun State Command of the Peace Corps of Nigeria has organised a two-day empowerment training for all the 57 local government commanders.

Some of the learned skills included making of perfume, liquid soap, air freshener, bar soap, germicide among others.

Speaking at the opening session, the State Commandant, Patriot (Dr) Olalekan Yusuff disclosed that the motive behind the training was to equip them with life saving skills, noting that some of the products are in high demands in the markets.

Yusuff, who was represented by his Deputy in charge of Administration, Patriot Olufemi Akinyemi, noted that the leadership of the command believes that the commanders are closer to the grassroots, saying they can also serve as agents of positive change in their respective local government by training other unemployed youths in their areas on how to produce the goods and make legitimate money.

His words: “This training is part of strategies lined up by the Command to further propagate and project the teachings and orientation of Peace Corps of Nigeria ably led by Ambassador (Dr) Dickson Akoh to Nigerians, irrespective of their location, tribe, religion and ethnic background.

*And as we are teaching you all these skills today, we are empowering you to help thousands of others in your respective local government”.

“We want you to go out there to meet those youths who have lost hope in the country and those who are indulging in shady deals to desist from it and embrace legitimate means of making money.

"We want you to go out there and train them for free and let them feel the positive side of life through Peace Corps of Nigeria,” he stated.

He explained that the command would not only train them but also give them startup capital.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen said they would ensure that they spread the knowledge and skills they have acquired to the people living in their locality.

They expressed joy about the approach of the leadership of the corps in attempting to help the government to reduce poverty in the society, train defiant youths on positive ways of life and helping to build more entrepreneurs in the country.

They also called on the federal government and the National Assembly to do the needful on the statutory backing for the corps in order to allow officers to perform their duties as required of them.
