Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, says it is time for the Igbo people to ask their fellow Nigerians what type of country they want.

Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, says it is time for the Igbo people to ask their fellow Nigerians what type of country they want.

Mr. Obiano stated this on Monday in Awka, Anambra State at a one-day summit organized by Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Tagged the South East Zonal Summit on Restructuring the Nigerian Federation, the event at Ekwueme Square was hosted by Mr. Obiano and attended by representatives of critical segments of Igbo people across seven states in Nigeria and the diaspora.

Declaring the summit open, Mr. Obiano said the time had come for Igbo people to ask the Nigerian nation some very hard questions regarding the country he lamented is on the verge of state failure.

“The question on everyone’s mind today is ‘what kind of country do Nigerians want Nigeria to be?’

“This is a question that will determine Nigeria’s future and Nigeria’s greatness,” he said.

“Happily, different ethnic groups and geo-political zones have made bold efforts to ask this question in recent times. And today, Ndigbo will ask their own!”

Mr. Obiano narrated his personal story with the Nigerian’s history to buttress his theme.

“As governor of Anambra State, I was born and raised in Nigeria and I have lived in Nigeria for the better part of my life. I have lived the Nigerian dream and felt Nigeria’s heartbreaks. I know what my people want from Nigeria and the question we must ask Nigeria.

“We must ask what every forward-looking people want from any socio-political arrangement – life, liberty and a chance to raise families.”

Mr. Obiano said the restructuring of the Nigerian federation is a core concern of the Igbo.

“We must ask for a just, fair and equitable federation where every citizen is guaranteed the freedom to be the best they can be and aspire to the highest position in the land, regardless of their tribe, culture or religion."

“And this is what Nigeria in its present structure, has not given us,” he stated.

The governor exhorted the present generation of Igbo people and other Nigerians not to betray the great work of their frontline leaders who liberated Nigeria from colonial rule.

“Brothers and sisters, we have answered the call of history. And hopefully, history will be kind to us. If our forefathers invested their youthful hopes and power of their intellect in the Nigerian of their Nigeria of their time, we have in our wealth, our enterprise and emotion in remaking Nigeria,” he said.

“Indeed, no other ethnic group has as much investment in the Nigerian Project as Ndigbo. For if we rose from the ruins of the Civil War to rebuild Eastern Nigeria in record time, there should be no doubt about what Ndigbo can bring to the table in a fair, just and equitable Nigeria.”

The summit later received solidarity messages from activists from other geopolitical zones in the campaign for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation.

They include Dan Suleiman, Jerry Gana, Ayo Adebanjo, Olu Falae, Cornelius Adebayo, Banji Akintoye, Segun Mimiko and Kofo Buknor-Akerele.

Also in attendance were Edwin Clark, Idongesit Nkanga, Sam Oviawe, Don Idada Ikpenwence, Mac Emokpore, Vivien Ere-Imananagha, Bassey Ewa-Henshaw, and Tony Inyiam among many other dignitaries.

What's this one saying ?

This one has refused to call a spade, rather he keeps beating around the bush just to be politically correct..
Average IBO man wants nothing but total balkanization of this rotten contraption , but politicians keep sabotaging it for their own egocentric benefit. Some of them believe that once this country is balkanized, majority of them might fizzle away from political scene . Then the mischievous ones among them will keep shouting "restructuring" like lunatics just to save face while some gullible southerners are buying such useless idea.
What are you restructuring,?, the same restructuring Ojukwu clamoured for @ Aburi which Gowon rejected hence the civil war..
Even those that are clamouring for restructuring have done practically nothing about it other than hinding under their keyboards to clamour for their own restructuring .. Funny enough that those clamouring for the so called restructuring are quick to criticize IPOB for their protest for independence why "restructuring" chanters are doing their restructuring protest behind the closed doors . Clowns!
Obiano should go and hide his face

What you (IPOB)want is clear -balkanization. Is that what others want?

In a family of 7, what you, as a member of the family want must be moderated by what other family members want. That's the message that's tough for IPOB to understand.

Nigeria is still Nigeria and until and if the balkanization happens, you must ask Ijaw, Efik, Ishang, Tiv and Bekwaras what they want in order to chat a cause of progress. Tough, but that's the way.

Even the referendum you (IPOB) seek will have to be by all voting populace and will be done with voters card. Better go get your PVC

Thank you bros! What he have here is a classic case of burying your head in the sand hoping your problems would go away!

It seems they only chant this 'restructuring' mantra just to take some of the wind out of the sails of Igbos demand for referendum! They want to make it look like there's a 2nd and much preferred option available to us.

Now after the effort, time and money wasted on that jamboree on Monday, everyone has gone back home and it's business as usual!

Even if, by some form of divine providence, the polity is restructured, the core Muslim north with their unfair numerical advantage in states and LGAs will ensure that whatever is agreed would be so watered down and insignificant to be of any use to anyone down south: they'd still have same unfair advantage in number of states/LGAs, still be leeching off the oyel and gas in the south, still ensure all the critical ministries, depts, institutions and security outfits (like the army, police, aviation, ports, customs, NNPC, etc) are in the exclusive list where they can still control and keep an eye on things, and continue in the quest of holding down the south so they don't develop too much and leave the north for dust!

The south needs to unite. From lagos to calaba from bayelsa to enugu. Then the south needs to tell the north how we want restructuring to be last last. Then the north might say no cos it might not favour them. The south will make a few consessions but still retain their advantages. The north might still say no yet again cos it doesnt favour them still.

Then the south will read the riot act to the north that will change Africa forever. THE LAGOS DECLEARATION will be the declearation of independence of all southern states as FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF SOUTH NIGERIA.

Lets see if north will win in the ensuing war.
