Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is worried that hectares of land that are supposed to be under the state forest reserves are being used to grow Indian hemp by some unpatriotic elements.
Akeredolu, who describes the activities of the unpatriotic elements as condemnable and shameful, is sad over the depletion of the state forest resources.
The governor expressed the concern recently while playing host to the state Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Haruna Dagara, in Akure.
He said: "Cannabis and it's cultivation is a great concern to us in Ondo State. We have today very large areas, which should be for our use in terms of forest reserves, being cultivated for the growing of cannabis by some unpatriotic people."
"Unfortunately, our men don't have the necessary ammunition to confront them, hence the need for collaboration with you to eradicate their nefarious activities."
Speaking earlier, the state NDLEA Commander, Dagara said that the command had seized a total of 295, 779kg of cannabis saliva, besides destroying about 36.5 hectares of cannabis farm.
Dagara added that the command also arrested 26 drug suspects comprising 24 men and two women, as well as recorded a total of five convictions.
According to the NDLEA chief, the command has secured the final forfeiture and the permission to publicly destroy 111 tonnes of cannabis as part of the efforts aimed at waging a formidable war against illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the state.
Dagara said: "Also from January till date, 172 litres of 'skivvies' was seized, 48.5 hectares of cannabis farm destroyed, three houses and five vehicles confiscated and 11 convictions recorded."
