The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday said it would win the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State easily without rigging or using federal might as was being claimed by the state governor, Ayo Fayose.

While speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Thursday, Fayose had alleged that the APC was plotting to rig the election in connivance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He alleged that APC and INEC had struck a deal to disenfranchise 50 percent of the electorate by “heavily preloading the smart card readers.”

He alleged that thousands of voters would be disenfranchised in Ikere-Ekiti, the hometown of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, and Ado-Ekiti, the hometown of his running mate, Mr. Ayodeji Ogunsakin.

Fayose alleged that the APC had been distributing what he called fake empowerment forms to lure voters.

However, in his response, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said Governor Fayose, having used federal might to win the 2014 governorship election, as evident in the leaked audio tape by Sergeant Sagir Koli, thought the APC as the ruling party at the centre would do the same thing.

Abdullahi, who gave examples of Anambra and Osun states where the ruling party lost key elections despite being in power, said the APC would win the Ekiti governorship election easily because the people of the state were tired of Fayose and would not want him to continue by installing his deputy as his successor.

He said: “Someone who specialises in cutting off people’s heads, if he sees even a broom hovering over his head, he will run for cover because he knows what he does, which is killing people.

“When that person sees someone holding a broom, he will raise the alarm that his life is in danger. That is what is happening in Ekiti.

“We all heard the audio recording by a soldier, Sagir Koli, who talked about how the PDP used federal might, using soldiers, to rig election in the last governorship election in Ekiti.

“The PDP knew what they did in Ekiti by rigging the 2014 governorship election, using the military.

“Now that we are in power, they thought we are going to do the same to them, but we will not do that. We are progressives; we don’t play that kind of game.

“We are going to win the governorship election fair and square, without rigging, because the people of Ekiti are tired of the tragi-comedy that they have seen in the last four years of PDP rule in Ekiti State.

“They want something different. They want a government that is forward-looking, and that is what they are going to get if they vote for APC.

“We have conducted several elections in this country without rigging or federal might.

“There was governorship election in Anambra. Didn’t we lose? Why didn’t we rig or use federal might?

“There was a senatorial rerun election in Osun and we lost. We have a good credential for allowing free and fair contest.

“They should hold up their own credentials, what they did in the 16 years that they were in power and, in particular, the case of Ekiti – how they rigged the governorship election.

“I can assure you that we are not going to do that on our part,” he said.
