2018 World Environment Day has come and gone but nothing will ever change about Nigeria’s environmental pollution if all we do is to hold rallies, conferences and talk with no action to back it up.

For Nigeria to beat environmental pollution, the following categories of people have an influential part to play.

1. Companies and Organisations: To the best of my knowledge, there is no Eco-friendly practicing indigenous company in Nigeria. Even world top brands operating in Nigeria (aside very few) are not moved to save our environment because of much profit. Very sad! Until companies make it a point of duty to desist from harmful production practices that destroy our environment, our environment will keep deteriorating.

2. Religious Leaders: Religious leaders have a great influence in the lives of their followers. A good number of Nigerians have 100% belief in what their religious leaders tell them. During every religious gathering, religious leaders are encouraged to constantly enlighten their members on ways to contribute to save the environment. Making the world a better and safer place isn’t only about spirituality.

3. Celebrities/Entertainers: Entertainment is the language 90% of Nigerians listen and understand. Do you know how fast we will get in ending Nigeria’s environmental pollution if lyrics about sex, money, women, sensitive body parts, alcohol, and clubbing are interchanged for lyrics about environment pollution and being Eco-friendly? Do you know how closer we will be to curb environmental pollution if every Nigerian movie plot subtly passes the message of ‘safe environment’?

If everyone contributes their quota in advocating for safe environment practice, the Government will be persuaded to enact favourable ‘environment safety’ bills into laws.
